James Darnell Obituary

James E. "Chic" Darnell

Funeral services for James Edward "Chic" Darnell of Monroe will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 4, 2011 at North Monroe Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Bill Dye and Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating assisted by Rev. David Worthington. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Chic was born on October 9, 1923, in Philadelphia, MS to Emerson E. and Viola Pierce Darnell. He passed away at the Oaks Nursing Home in Monroe on September 2, 2011.

During WWII, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and when discharged, he attended East Mississippi Jr. College and the University of Mississippi. Upon graduation from Ole Miss, he re-enlisted in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as an airplane hydraulic specialist. In 1953, he went to work as a sales representative for a major tire company and retired as a district manager. His last employment was with Central Oil Company until his second retirement in 1989. He was a member of North Monroe Baptist Church where he was a member of Don Brant's Department. He was also an active member of American Legion Post No. 13.

Before retirement, Chic became interested in wheel thrown pottery and built his own potter's wheel and gas kiln, which served him well until he was sure he was going to continue to make this his hobby. At this time, he bought a factory-built potter's wheel and an electric kiln. Later, he built a Raku kiln and made beautiful Raku pottery. He built several of these Raku kilns for his pottery friends. Chic enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping with his family and many wonderful vacations on the beach. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Chic was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson Edward Darnell and Viola Pierce Darnell; and his brother, William H. Darnell.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Kathy Darnell; daughters, Cheryl Hammett and husband Randy of West Monroe, and Terri Barrett and husband Kevin of Western Springs, IL; grandchildren, Jessica Card and husband Adam, Lauren Bond and husband Brian, Kevin Barrett, Blake Barrett, and Mallory Barrett; great grandchildren, Aidyn, Britton, and Gabriel Bond.

Pallbearers will be Jim Knox, Glen McAdams, Brian Bond, Adam Card, Kevin Barrett, Jr., and Blake Barrett. Honorary pallbearers will be the Charles Pryor Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1:30 PM until service time at North Monroe Baptist Church Chapel.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the wonderful care our loved one received from the nurses and their aids at the Oaks and especially the ones in Eden Place, the Alzheimer's unit. Also, a special thanks to the AGAPE Hospice Group.

Memorial may be made to the Alzheimer Foundation and North Monroe Baptist Church, Priority 1 Fund or a charity of your choice.

Miss Kathy,
I remember the many times that I would turn around to "greet those around us" and there would be you and Mr. Chic. "your pew" was always behind "ours". I am so thankful that I was your mentoring friend. Your life has truly blest mine. I wish to express my sympathy to you and your family. Love, Susan
