Rodney Herrin Obituary

Rodney Neil Herrin, 64, of Cornelia, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and service. Rodney was born on August 22, 1961, to the late Jesse P. and Evelyn Cochran Herrin. He was a lifelong resident of Habersham County, Georgia, growing up in Cornelia and spending his entire life there except for a brief time in Royston following his fathers job transfer.
A proud 1980 graduate of Habersham County High School, Rodney achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Boy Scout Troop 70 in Franklin Springs, Georgia. The values he learned through Scouting - honesty, loyalty, and service - guided him throughout his life.
Rodney's dedication to his community was evident through his life's work. He proudly owned and operated Forest Lane Mini Mart and Pawn Shop, a cornerstone of Cornelia for 45 years, from 1980 to 2025. While the doors of the business may now be closed, the impact Rodney made will live on through the countless lives he touched. Known affectionately as a small-town banker, Rodney helped his customers with compassion and fairness. The Scout Oath was not just something he learned - it was something he lived. His shop was a gathering place where folks came to buy, sell, trade, and share stories - often about the biggest deer of the season.
Rodney also gave back by employing many local high school and college students over the years, serving as a patient teacher and life mentor. His example shaped many young lives and instilled values that extended well beyond work. In addition to his business and family life, Rodney was a dedicated member of the Cornelia Masonic Lodge, where he served faithfully through the ranks and ultimately as Master.
Above all, Rodney loved his family deeply. He and his wife, Kelley Barnette Herrin, were high school sweethearts who married in 1984 and shared a lifetime of love and adventure. Together, they enjoyed hiking, camping, and simply spending time outdoors. Rodneys children, Jonathan and Jessi, were the light of his life. He was always involved in their interests - hunting, fishing, four-wheeler riding, and even horseback riding, despite knowing little about horses.
Rodney's love for the outdoors extended to the family garden, which he faithfully prepared each year for his beloved mother and Aunt Eloise. He passed down his knowledge and skills to his children - both of whom learned how to drive a tractor and plant a garden under his patient guidance.
Rodney's family grew to include his cherished daughter-in-law, Emily Herrin, and his three adored grandchildren, Hampton, Price, and Bennett. Thursdays were special to Rodney, as he spent every week caring for his grandchildren from the time they were born - days filled with laughter, learning, and love that will forever be treasured by his family.
Rodney's life was one of service, family, and integrity. His legacy will continue to shine through all those who knew and loved him.
Rodney is survived by his loving wife, Kelley Barnette Herrin; his children, Jonathan and Jessi Herrin; daughter-in-law, Emily Herrin; and his precious grandchildren, Hampton, Price, and Bennett. He is also survived by his sister, Rita Herrin; and brother, Randy Herrin; and sister-in-law, Janice Herrin; along with several nieces and nephews. Rodney will also be fondly remembered by his beloved dog, Fig, who rarely left his side.
Rodney will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, steadfast work ethic, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from the chapel of McGahee-Griffin and McEntire Funeral Home with Dr. Brian James officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Swayne Cochran officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the service hour.
