Patrick Manion Obituary

Patrick A. (Red) Manion

Appleton - Patrick A. Manion (Red), 91, of Appleton, WI passed away unexpectedly on May 4, 2021.

Patrick was born on October 23, 1929 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to Herbert and Barbara Manion. Patrick was married to Betty Lou Manion (Spoehr) on June 30, 1949, in Oshkosh, WI, and they were married for 67 years.

He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and St. Norbert's High School in Green Bay, WI.

Pat learned the plastering trade as an apprentice with his father Herbert and Uncle Eddie in Peoria, IL. He realized his passion for the business and moved back home to Oshkosh to start and build his own plastering contracting business at age 21. His business and passion for plastering and stucco work, continued for 62 years, with his final project being completed at the age of 82. In his heart he never really retired from the business and was always looking for that next job.

Pat was an avid outdoorsman with a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing. He was proud of his trophy buck which he harvested at the young at heart age of 82. He loved to talk about his days growing up in Oshkosh, his Irish heritage and his time spent in the military where he served in the occupation in Japan. One of his favorite things to do was to go out to the woods and spend the day cutting and splitting wood and cooking hot dogs over the fire with his children.

Pat is survived by his six children: Barbara Manion-Platt (Curtis), Timothy (Melody), Patrick (Nancy), Dennis (Caron), Barton (Berit), and John (Jennifer).

Pat has sixteen grandchildren: Elizabeth, Jonathan (Claire), Sean (Amber), Meredith (Alex), Brian, Katherine (Kelly), Megan (Colin), Natalie, Timothy (Amy), Rebecca (Reald), Christina (Patrick), Joseph (Keri), Benjamin, Nicholas, Lindsey, Mitchell (Hannah).

He also has ten great-grandchildren: Olivia, Emile, Francis, Madison, Emma, Vivienne, Brayden, Quentin, Carson and Arla.

Pat is preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty Lou, his parents and his eight brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army in his name.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 13, 2021. Visitation is from 9:00am to 11:00am with service at 11:00am at Valley Funeral Home. Officiating will be Father John from Most Precious Blood Parish in New London. The family encourages all to wear masks.

Pat was so loved and will be greatly missed by his family…as well as those who appreciated his wit and Irish gift of gab.

So sorry to hear of Pat's passing. I only knew him for about a year. He came to my Dad's yard sale and he talked and talked about his life and had such love for his wife and children. I imagine he never met a stranger and he will be missed.

Sorry to hear your Dad has passed John. I always remember him with a cigar. Very nice man as my late Father would have said. Cherish the memories John, my sympathies to you and your entire family.

Dear Manion family,
Life on Stoney Beach was always a mix of Purtell’s and Manion’s chaos and laughter. Even though many years have passed, I still hold those memories and all of fondly in my heart. Thinking of you during this difficult time.

What a great guy he was. I have the pleasure of being a friend of Tim's (his son) and Mr. Manion took me bow hunting when I was only 14. He had such great stories and I will never forget the smell of his cigar as we drove to his hunting property. A very unique man with a wry smile and great sense of humor. The world lost a good one.

Our condolences to the whole Manion family. We will miss our many conversations with our favorite Uncle Red. He was a wonderful, kind man and staunch Republican. He loved his wife, his family, his country and hunting. Our hearts are heavy and we are so saddened today. Blessings to you all.
