Allan Burmester Obituary

Allan Walter Burmester, 82, of Olympia, Washington, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025, at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by family. He was born on September 22, 1943, in Tacoma, Washington.

Allan (Al) spent 44 years with North Thurston Public Schools as a teacher and administrator, often saying he "never worked a day in his life." He later served as Career and Technical Education Director and Athletic Director. Among his proudest achievements was helping bring the first networked computers into Washington public schools in the 1980s, earning him the nickname "Father of Technology."

He is survived by his wife, Tammy; his sons Jeff (Jocelyn) and Brian (Christina) Burmester; and four grandchildren: Louisa, Andi, Gideon, and Austin.

A lifelong baseball lover and devoted Mariners fan, Al dedicated decades to youth sports-coaching teams of all ages, advocating for Title IV, and volunteering countless hours, leaving a lasting impact on his community and generations of students. He also spent many years in the North Thurston High School greenhouse, sharing his love of flowers and plants with students.

Al was a devoted brother to Ed and Tom Burmester, and a loving husband and father. His influence will be felt for years to come.

In honor of Al's life and his battle with blood cancer, please consider donating blood to your local blood bank-a simple act that can make a life-saving difference for others.

Earlier today

Glad I had the opportunity to play baseball for Al on Wes's Supermarket when I was 15 and 16 years old. He was the best coach and mentor I ever had. Al and Tom dedicated very spring and summer to make us the best ball players that we could be. They created a Dynasty with Wes's. He'll be truly missed but never gone from my greatest memories. Rest in peace my Friend and Coach,

Al was simply one of the greatest coaches and human beings EVER. I played for him on Wes' SuperMart team in 1970 and 71. He and his brother Tom were so far ahead of their time with respect to baseball and life. To think now kids parents pay thousands of dollars to play "select" ball when all of us got to play for one of the best run baseball clubs there will ever be. I will miss all the knowledge he was still sharing with me over a Cloverleaf pizza but will always be grateful for what positive impact he had on my life and the lives of countless others. He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family.

So sad to hear the news. Great coach, great sense of humor and one of the most important teachers I had in my lifetime. What I learned in his Accounting class I used my entire business career.

Al and I coached football together at Nisqually Jr. High and The freshman team at Timberline High School. What a loyal friend he was. We worked well together on and off the field (listening to Creedence). Many memories...all good.

I played for Al on the 1973-1974 Wes's SuperMart teams. As a coach, he used baseball as his messaging platform to teach life's lessons. Those lessons stuck and have for over 50 years now. Lessons of hard work, teamwork, accountability, respect for yourself, your team, your opponents. That everything you did was a reflection not only on yourself but on those around you. Have a temper tantrum, throw your helmet, pay the fine...cover the scratch with coins, run extra sprints - you learned that only you were responsible for your actions. The fact that 5-6-7-8 different guys chipped into a text string the other day reflecting on the impact Al had on their lives says it all. Al left an incredible impression on me and was instrumental in preparing me for the future. You will be missed but never forgotten!

To his family, you were blessed to have had such a man in your life. My deepest condolences.

Al was my baseball coach at Timberline H.S. back in 1972 & 1973. Coach Burmester taught me to be a pitcher as I was the only left-hander on the team. In the beginning I was highly disappointed because I grew up playing first base, but he worked diligently with me, providing a lot of positive support & great coaching. He was a good leader and had a knack of bringing out the best in his players and teams. He was very proud of the fact that he brought in the first aluminum bats. No one else in the entire Black Hills League had them yet. I send my condolences to his family.
