Edward Hoffman Obituary

Edward Hoffman

June 13, 1937 - September 24, 2023

Lacey, Washington - Edward Peter Hoffman, MD

Edward was 86 years old and born to Roslyn and Walter Hoffman. He grew up in San Mateo, California. He graduated from Stanford University. He obtained his MD from Duke University. After his internship he spent 2 years serving in the Navy at Rough and Ready Island Base in Stockton, California during the Vietnam War. The next 5 years he did his residency in neurosurgery at Huntington Memorial Hospital. He then spent a year working at the Midland Center for Neurosurgery in Birmingham, England.

He returned to the United States and moved to Olympia, Washington. Ed practiced Neurosurgery at Saint Peter Hospital for 20 years. He touched and healed many lives and was a favorite of the nurses. He also performed medical charity work in Nepal and Vietnam.

His humor lit up the room and he always demonstrated kindness, tolerance and respect. Ed loved to garden, fish, boat, backpack and take photographs. He had a particular fondness for the High Sierras, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Lake Powell, Death Valley and Southeast Asia. He created a passion for travel and nature for his children. We all had special trips with family and "Smed." Smed was his nickname and fit perfectly. He loved to glue things and coined many terms including "jitter juice" for coffee and "zoom flake" for a 5 minute nap. These terms are still used frequently throughout the family and will be passed on for generations.

He also enjoyed good wine, coffee and being with friends and family. A favorite past time was teasing his grandchildren. After his retirement he traveled the world with his wife, Carolyn, taking photographs of the locals.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Duniway Hoffman, his children Carl Duniway Hoffman, Eric Duniway Hoffman, Andrea Hoffman and Gregory Duniway Hoffman, his daughter-in-law Carolyn M. Hoffman, his grandchildren Alexa Hoffman, Austin Hoffman, Aidan Hoffman, Gillian Hoffman and Heath Hoffman. During his last few years Ed was wheelchair bound due to Parkinson. He never lost his sense of humor or the sparkle in his eyes. He is loved and will be missed dearly.

Condolences can be sent to The Hoffman Family, 5031 Orcas St. NE, Lacey WA 98516.
