RIP Marianna. I can still feel the void of your presence all these years later. I admired and looked up to you for guidance in our ever changing profession. Your dedication to the financial aid field was immeasurable. May your family know that you made a positive difference in this world.

I have fond memories of time spent with Marianna when she was at Saint Martin's and with the Department of Education. She was a great roommate at conferences too and just a great colleague. I will miss her very much.

Marianna was a rich resource for the financial aid community. I met her for the first time in May of 2010; she was so excited to come to Ohio to speak at a conference.
I realize she was much more than a rich resource for the family. I am sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing her with us.

Marianna's dedication to financial aid helped so many students--through her work at both St. Martins and at the US Department of Ed. It takes a very special and kind person to make her life about helping others. I'm glad I got a chance to watch her shining example all these years. I hope her family knows how much we valued her.

Marianna was a big part of our PacFAA Ohana (family). She always advocated for our students in the Pacific Islands and ensured that we understood the regulations to help them. We will all miss you, Marianna and we know that you will continue to watch over us and always be in our hearts.

I am at a loss. My best and greatest source of information for all things Title IV is gone. If I ever had need for background information, or a matter-of-fact explanation, I never thought to contact anyone other than Marianna. She'd respond quickly and completely, and not ever make me feel "less than" for not knowing. I could only hope to be half as knowledgeable as she was. Rest peacefully, Marianna.

I first met Marianna about 20 years ago when I was working at Caltech and she was brought in as a temp. (need analysis consultant, I think, back when that was done by hand!). We were friends ever since,like many of you. I would re-connect with her at conferences and whenever she was in the area. We'd also stay in touch through email, which was usually prompted by some type of arcane question about federal aid (after 30 years in financial aid, I still need my federal trainer!!). Then we would chat about real life (mostly the good stuff, she didn't fill me in much on the bad stuff, don't think that was her style). She was fantastic,the ultimate professional, always on top of the latest regulations (and always right), always easy and fun to be around. I was just plain lucky to know her. I will miss her terribly.

Marianna was my mentor for 14+ years in the federal financial aid arena. She was held in high esteem by my colleagues in the financial aid community across the country. She is already and will continue to be greatly missed and admired.
Rest in Peace, Marianna. You certainly earned your place in heaven.

I worked with Marianna at St. Martin's College years ago. As Director of Campus Ministry, I often spent time talking with her and sometimes asking help for students in trouble. She became a true friend. A picture she got for me of Franciscan monks selling oranges from California and framed by David still is hung in the foyer of the Campus Ministry Office. I said a Mass for the repose of her soul today. I keep David and her family in my prayers and thoughts. Father Benedict

Marianna was a dear friend who will be missed so much by the many folks whose lives she touched.
We came to know each other as colleagues through our work at the Department of Education. For me as a person who works with policy issues in Washington, she was a window on the world. I often consulted with her on what she knew of the student aid community's concerns and questions. I could count on her for thoughtful and honest advice, and I developed a deep and abiding respect for the depth of her knowledge and her intelligence. Beyond our professional relationship, we became good friends. Often, we commiserated over whatever was currently driving us nuts at work, and our late evening email exchanges often would degenerate from some serious work issue into an email badminton match of bons mots tossed back and forth.
As we became friends, and not just colleagues, I always looked forward to when we would be at the same conference or she would be here in Washington. We would set time aside to do something, for example, go to a fun dinner or attend a performance or both. I will especially remember how much she loved the Alvin Ailey dance company. Even in the midst of her detail to our staff here in Washington last year when she was not feeling well, we managed to work in a play, “In the Next Room...,” and an opera, Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Both seem so right for her when I look back. I will very much miss her sharp intelligence and even sharper wit, which she seldom failed to employ at my expense.
My thoughts are with her family, friends, and colleagues. We have lost someone who was a unique and truly special human being.

I work in the San Francisco office of the Department of Education and was lucky enough to work with Marianna as a colleague. I'm another (albeit former) financial aid person, who is a huge fan of Marianna! She helped us out of a huge pit that we'd dug ourselves into. We had one of those wierd programs, with overlapping scheduling, and when we discovered we'd been "doing it wrong", Marianna came to our rescue. We emailed daily, as she SO patiently walked me through the process of correcting our wrongs, and taught me how to make it right. She was no less than amazing, and - even though I abandoned higher education for the real estate industry two years ago - I've continued to remember Marianna with the highest regard and respect. She is missed, in many places, but her legacy will endure!

I always looked forward to any conference that Marianna attended. I knew we could count on her for valuable information delivered with wry wit and a generous dose of honesty and reality. Over the years she became a friend as well as a colleague, and she will be missed. Her impact is clear by seeing the number of poeple from all over that are paying homage to her.

We know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. She will be truly missed, but never forgotten.

I was so saddened to hear about Marianna's death. Although I didn't know her personally, she was highly regarded in the financial aid community. My heartfelt condolences to Marianna’s family.
I came to know Marianna through the Financial Aid Community and the fact that my son and his family live in the Seattle area.

I think it will take awhile to grasp the magnitude of Marinna’s passing. She could take the most complex set of regulations and deliver them in such a way we could all understand. Her grace and wit made her so approachable and therefore an invaluable resource to the Financial Aid profession. Marianna, my friend, colleague and teacher – words cannot express how much you will be missed. Marianna may you rest in peace.

Even though we never worked together at an institution, I always felt a connection to Marianna because we both worked at Saint Martin's back in the day. Marianna was so very knowledgeable, accepted the hypothetical questions without batting a lash, and a great resource. As I have moved around the United States, my DOE rep changed, but I always was able to ask Marianna for assistance as a trusted source. Thank you, Marianna, for making me a better financial aid representative, for always helping the community out and for loving what you did. You will be missed by many and I hope you knew how much you were appreciated (even though we so often forget to say thanks). Your family is in my prayers.

I met Marianna when she was at NELA and I had started working in student loans at a lender in 1993. She was a major resource at NELA and a life saver for so many when she went to work for DOE. Beyond her genius what I admired about Marianna was her sense of humor. If you weren't paying attention you could miss it. And it was always worth not missing. She presented the information in a practical "speak" and not government speak. She was very generous with her humor in Feb at the Oregon conference and that was a highlight for me. I am very sad and will always keep her in my fond memories.

I think one of the great things about Marianna was that she never forgot what it was like to be in the trenches at a school. She could put on her "Fed Hat" and give the appropriate answer, but she could also take it off and commiserate with you.
Since, I am never one to just take things at face value, Marianna was one of my favorite verbal sparring partners. She could give it and she could take it and when we were done, there was no hold over personally.
I will miss her personally and professionally. Thank you to her family for letting us share in her life.

I will miss you "old" friend. But know that each one of us you taught or gave advice to keeps your legacy bright. You were one "awesome" federal trainer. There are people who teach and there are people you learn from, people who store information and others who share it. Marianna was a genuine source of learning and knowledge to all of her colleagues. Too few taxpayers will ever know the huge bargain they received every single day that Marianna Deeken worked for the Department of Education and likewise too few will know what they've lost with her passing. While the wider public has only lost a tremendous asset all of her colleagues in the financial aid community have lost a generous and kind soul who always gave of herself. May you rest in the eternal peace you long ago earned.

I starting in financial aid over 20 years ago and the industry was very complicated. The training sessions where Marianna presented gave me insight to the famous words, I also use, "It depends". She always helped anyone who needed and asked for help. I remember her saying you can ask her anything and she would get the answer for you. She gave out her contact information and always answered you promptly. She understood the heavy burden FA professionals dealt with. She was always there as an avocate. I will miss her. I will keep Marianna & her family in my prayers.

April 6, 2011
I so appreciated that Marianna cared more about schools doing things right, than being concerned with what they might reveal they were doing wrong in asking her a question. Her mindset in that way made you feel entirely comfortable in seeking an answer or clarification no matter how 'stupid' you felt your question might be. The knowledge she had for all things "financial aid" was only surpassed by her incredible concern and care for students and FAAs.
Because of her expertise and example I was a better FAA for the 16+ years I worked at schools and for the past 6 years a more skilled trainer.
Each time you are thought of Marianna, I hope that you feel the warmth, love and appreciation that goes along with our memories of you.

For a brand new financial aid officer with no previous years of work study, Marianna was a kind and patient trainer. My deepest condolences on your loss.

Marianna -I would like to think you somehow "knew" how much we all looked forward to your training sessions and "knew" we appreciated your uncanny ability to convince us that we could deal with the latest crazy regulations and programs.
We knew it was OK to ask you anything and no matter how busy you were, you would not hang up until you were convinced that we "got it".
You made us better at our jobs and through us, touched the lives of countless students.
Our prayers and thoughts are with David and your parents. I hope they find some comfort in reading these messages and knowing that you truly made a difference.

Marianna was our beloved "fed" - always answering questions with wit, humor, and professionalism. We may not have liked the answer, but it was delivered with care and compassion. Marianna counseled me as I began in financial aid and throughout the past 11 years.
No matter the question or time of day, she responded. You will be missed by all those that you touched within the financial aid community, but also by millions of students who made it through college with financial aid because of your diligence and training.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint in the snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.

She has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much;
Who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children;
Who has filled her niche and accomplished her task;
Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it;
Who has left the world better than she found it,
Whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;
Who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best she had;
Whose life was an inspiration;
Whose memory a benediction
We'll miss you Marianna

I worked alongside Marianna for almost 15 years. She was more than a colleague and a friend, she was my other half, providing balance and unflagging support. We complemented and challenged each other in the best possible ways. She will be greatly missed and she leaves a huge hole in my heart. God bless you Marianna and may you find peace and love.

Marianna was a financial aid kindred spririt. We loved the work, we loved the people. We were fascinated by needs analysis, Return of Title IV rules and the ever-changing landcape of our business. I will miss her as an authority, friend, and collaborator. She will be missed by many. She has indirectly touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of students who would not have had the level of care and help they received from a financial aid professional without her having touched our lives.
More than devotion and excellence in her work, Marianna was a wonderful, loving person. Her sense of humor, love of David and family, care of each person she met is an inspiration we will carry with us.

Marianna was very helpful to me especially during the last few years. She was very helpful not only with the regulations but with her understanding of institutional idiosyncrasies; her experience as an aid administrator, working in compliance with a guarantor, and as a federal trainer allowed her to see issues from a variety of directions. I had no idea she was ill. She was such a good friend to me. I will miss her.
She represented the financial aid community so well. My heart goes out to that community and her family and friends at her passing.

Marianna was at one of the first finance conferences I went to back in 2001. She made it clear that we were welcome to get in touch with her if we had any questions or issues. So I did. She emailed info to me right away and suggested that I call her. We had a great conversation where she finally ask, "are you new to finance?". After a while, she concluded with, "don't worry, you'll do just fine!". Well, she was right. It's ten years later, and I'm a director in financial aid and I love my job. I honestly think her words hit their mark. I mean, if someone that high up in financial aid said I would be okay, it must be true. Every time I saw her she was just as encouraging. Financial aid will never be the same...

Marianna was extremely knowledgeable and an excellent trainer. What an asset she was to the Department. Marianna, thank you so very much!

Such a great loss for all of us. Marianna has always been there with humor, honesty, humility, incredible knowledge---can't imagine I can't call her anymore or give her a hug at a CASFAA conference. Oh my, you are missed.

Marianna was a great teacher and mentor. She will be greatly missed. She was always willing to help us figure out all the regulations and how to apply them to our crazy situations. GASFAA, SASFAA and the whole financial aid family will miss her greatly. Your family will be in our prayers.
