Olympia, Washington - Tumwater resident Norma (Andriese) Schuiteman died with family and friends by her side on 28 March, 2022 in Olympia, Washington after a battle with cancer. The family would like to offer special thanks to the many friends who supported Norma during her illness. A memorial service will be held at the Lacey Community Center in Lacey, Washington, at 3:00 pm on 7 July, 2022.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Tony and Mary Andriese, Norma grew up in Thornton, Illinois. She enjoyed time with extended family, trips to Big Star Lake in Michigan and playing on her school sports teams. She was a graduate of Illiana High School and attended Calvin College, graduating in 1968. She married Keith Schuiteman soon after graduation. Together they moved to Fremont, Michigan, parting ways some years later. After graduating from Hackley Nursing School in 1980, Norma began work at Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont, beginning in the education department and leaving as a hospital vice-president. During this time, she was an active member and a president of the local Rotary Club.
While serving on the board of the Fremont Area Foundation, Norma became intrigued by non-profit work. Following her time in health care, she worked at an organization developing non-profit capacity in Kansas and Arkansas before entering the role of Executive Director at the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound in 2004. She loved her job at the Foundation, thriving on the community-building and mentoring opportunities and relishing the strong friendships she made in the area. She retired in 2019, having secured accreditation from the Council on Foundations and built the organization's endowment substantially during her tenure.
Outside of work, Norma loved local and international travel, sewing, baking, rock collecting, British television, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Richard Andriese; her daughter, Michelle Schuiteman; her grandchildren, Lucy and Dan; and by many friends and relatives.
