Arthur Scott Obituary

Arthur Julian Scott (Scotty) passed away at his vacation home in Burnsville, NC on October 18, 2016 following a short illness. Scotty was born June 13, 1926 in Sebring, FL and was raised in Vidalia, GA.
At age 17, he enrolled in Emory University, called to study for the ministry by an abiding faith in God that would last through his entire life. But WWII was raging and the call to military service was strong. He eventually prevailed on his parents to give blessing and the required permission for him to join the US Navy despite his young age. He returned from duty in the Pacific in 1946.
After the war, Scotty enrolled at Georgia Tech and earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1954. Soon after graduation, he joined Radiation, Inc., which became Harris Corporation, Melbourne, FL. His career spanned four decades in the development and implementation of military, intelligence and civil communications equipment and systems – as designer, systems engineer, program manager and corporate executive. As a Program Director and then Harris' Vice President/General Manager of International Programs Division, Scotty ran far-flung programs through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He was One-Of-A-Kind in his career; a brilliant negotiator. He retired from Harris in 1993 at the age of 67.
Scotty and his wife Georgia Mae, the daughter of George D. Keller, formerly of Hamlet, spent their retirement years between their Lake Washington home in Melbourne and their mountain retreat in North Carolina. In later years they resided much of the time in New Jersey with their daughter, Rutgers Professor Michelle Meloy. Throughout both working years and retirement, he was an intense student of history and American culture. He was also a baseball fan, and especially enjoyed attending games with his son, Van.
Scotty is survived by his devoted and loving wife Georgia Mae, whom he cherished throughout their 35 year marriage; his beloved children, Julian Van Scott (Mary), Pt, Charlotte, FL; daughters Dale Ann (Alton) of Richmond Virginia and Dr. Michelle Meloy of Mount Royal, New Jersey. Left to miss and love him forever are precious grandchildren Tonya, Ashley, Vanessa, Lauren, Morgan, Scottie, Rebecca, Juliann, R. Morgan, Connor Miller, and 12 great-grandchildren; nephew Russ Scott, Jr. (Carol) and beloved Nieces/Goddaughters Suzy Sheridan, Pamela Carter and Sara Webb. Scotty was predeceased by his brilliant and deeply loved brother, Russell M. Scott, Sr, in 1984 and grandson Robbie in 1986.
Special friends who added abundantly to the happiness & success of his 90 years are Michael F. Maguire, Peter C. Stitt, Donald B. Jones, Bruno Weber, Jon E. Cornell, Barron W. Godbee, Frances N. Richadson, Margie Kemmler, Deborah and Geoffrey Bowen, Dee Meloy-Phillips, William B. and Diane Kicker, Sue Lynne Wall, Dr. Susan L. Miller, Kristin M. Curtis, Cris & Pam Fredericksen, Bryon and Sara and dozens more whom he loved and respected. You know who you are.
The family will be forever grateful to Dr. Susan C. Day, University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, for her selfless interest and guidance on this journey. Cynthia Yarborough, Betty Barrier, Sharon Denning and Sunshine Tina made every single day better & we love them for it.
Private family cremation services have been held.
Scotty loved his animals beyond-measure. If you wish to remember him, please make a donation to your local humane society. The family can be notified of your loving gesture at 216 Waterbury Court, Mount Royal, N.J. 08061.
