1939 - 2025

Clarie Anne Michaels, 86, of Bremen, Indiana passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. She was born on April 27, 1939, in Gary, Indiana to the late Clayton and Mary (Schmidt) Shoup. Claire attended Merrillville High School in Merrillville, Indiana, graduating in 1957. She worked for a legal firm for several years then accepted employment at United States Steel where she met her husband. She married Lowell Michaels, on April 24, 1964. They resided in Merrillville and later moved to Valparaiso in 1977. She became a full-time mother and was active with the PTO including all of Betsy's school activities and helped test kindergarteners for many years. They moved to Lake of the Woods in Bremen, Indiana in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Lowell Michaels; a daughter, Betsy (Charlie) Houin; two grandchildren, Matthew and Marcus Houin along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Phyllis and Madelon. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 5, 2025 at the Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen. Funeral services will begin at 1:00pm at the Mishler Funeral Home with Rev. Max Milton officiating. Burial will follow in the Bremen Cemetery. We would like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Jesse Gettinger; long-time Michiana Home Health care nurse, Bethany Maxwell; independent caregivers, Janet Prawat, Rhoda Jordan, and Barbara Baney; the Heartland Hospice nurse, Beth Karas along with all the other nurses that came to the house to care for Claire. She had been bed bound for the last 4 ½ years at home being cared by her loving husband.
