C. Caldwell Obituary

DuBOIS - Clair Thomas "Tom" Caldwell III, 67, of DuBois, passed away on Nov. 24, 2025, with his wife Cindy by his side.

The oldest of five children, Tom was born to Clair Thomas Caldwell Jr. and Elinor (Vaughn) Caldwell on June 4, 1958, in Spangler.

A graduate of Ridgway High School and lumber grading school in Memphis, Tenn., he put himself through Penn State working three days a week at multiple local lumber companies. This experience led him to a long, fulfilling career of over 40 years in the lumber business, spending 30 of them with Gutchess Lumber Company, based in Cortland, N.Y. He retired from Gutchess Lumber in June 2024 and proudly served on the company's Board of Directors from July 2024 until his death.

While at Penn State, Tom met the woman who would become his wife of 45 years, Cindy Rae Fink. They married in 1980 in State College, and went on to build a loving family.

He is survived by both parents; his wife; daughters Susan (Justin Paxton) and Megan (Adam Letavay); sisters Missy Launer (Shane), Beth Scott (Jim Weinberger), Helen Marshall (Ken), and brother Rob Caldwell (Rachel); mother-in-law Shirley Fink; brothers-in-law Randy Fink (Deb) and Brian Fink (Helen); and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Hale Fink, and sister-in-law, Darlene Knaresboro.

A celebration of life is being planned for the spring in DuBois. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations be made in Tom's name to Gift of Life Howie's House in Philadelphia, a temporary residence for transplant patients, donors, and their families that provided Tom's family with so much more than just a place to stay for the final months of his life. The family has entrusted Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. of Curwensville with arrangements.

Yesterday

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Tom´s sudden passing. Beth and I had just corresponded with him and we were all looking forward to him recovering and being able to travel again. I first met Tom at a family reunion after I started dating Beth and he warmly welcomed me to the family. Tom and Cindy were always gracious hosts when we visited them at Treasure Lake. Tom was an excellent chef, grilling us his delicious beer can chicken. I will fondly remember discussing with him our shared interest in traveling cross country in retirement and his sense of humor. Regrettably, we will never get to take that RV trip. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him and my sincerest condolences to his wife Cindy, daughters Susan and Megan, parents Clair and Elinor and siblings Missy, Beth, Rob, and Helen.
