Betty was a lovely person -- lovely to look at and lovely to know. She was kind and generous and enjoyed life to the fullest. We were friends from about 10 years old. We both enjoyed riding our bikes and our horses (!) all over the Clearfield / Curwensville area. Betty had a beautiful singing voice and we loved singing together while riding on the school bus. Don't remember our destination but do remember the singing -- a lot of the Everly Brothers.
We continued our friendship although mostly through Facebook these past years. I will miss you Betty.
Following is an excerpt from the Class of 1960 50th Reunion booklet: Betty, short for Elizabeth, is married to Tom Ritz, who is also retired. Betty said she met Tom by chance and thought be was kinda´ cute. She has 2 children (1 deceased), 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 4 stepchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-grandchild.
Betty was active in the Press Club, Choir, Alpha Tri-hi-Y, and Baseball while in high school. Following graduation she moved to Washington DC where she went to work for GEICO. From August 1962 until May 1998 Betty worked for the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a union, in Washington DC. She also worked for the church she attended. Betty later enrolled at and graduated from Logos Christian College. She recalled that nothing much had really changed for her after receiving her degree but she thought that her classmates would be surprised to learn that she is a Certified Lay Speaker in the Methodist Church. Betty´s first car was a 1955 Chevy Convertible-salmon in color. "It was a `hot car´!" she said.
Although Betty is well-traveled, she found the Greek Island of Patmos a beautiful place to see and experience. She counts the Greek island as one of her most interesting vacation spots. While there, she joined her oldest grandaughter on a motor scooter to sightsee around the island.
Starting into a coal mine thought to be abandoned soon turned into one of Betty´s more scary experiences. Just a short walk into the mine, she heard unidentified noises so she and her companions turned around and quickly ran back out!
Today you´ll find Betty traveling, reading, walking, going to church, singing in the choir, and doing Bible studies. She says about her life today, "Everything seems pretty cool right now." But she said that if she could re-experience one thing in her life, it would be to have made a different decision about only one thing. Betty´s all-time favorite entertainer is ELVIS ! Her favorite music includes Country, Gospel, and Blue Grass.
She adds, "Thanks for letting me be a part of this. Can´t wait to see everyone!"
