MELVIN ARCHER Obituary
Born Oct. 30, 1936 in Sterling, rural Houtzdale, he was the son of the late Joseph and Arveda (Truax) Lobb Archer.
Melvin was a 1954 graduate of Houtzdale Woodward Brisbin High School and a member of the Brisbin Baptist Church. He served in the United Stated Army from 1961 to 1962.
During his lifetime he was employed by C & Z Chevrolet, Stott Coal Company from 1976 to 1996 as a bookkeeper, manager of Clearfield True Value, and office personal at Lansberry Trucking until his retirement.
His passion was serving the Houtzdale Vol. Fire Co. where he was a lifetime member. He served as No. 1 Fire Police Captain, financial secretary and treasurer. In 2012 he was recognized for his service and awarded the Houtzdale Day's Citizen of the Year Award.
On Aug. 6, 1960, he married Carol (Irwin) Archer, who preceded him in death on March 8, 1995.
Melvin is survived by two daughters, Colleen (John) Vingless of Houtzdale, Janea Archer of Brisbin; two granddaughters, Mindy (Erik) Dick of Coalport, Brittany Archer of Brisbin; and a great grandson, Brandon Dick of Coalport. Also surviving is a former son-in-law, Bill Albright of Houtzdale; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and a sister, Janet Bloom.
Family and friends will be received at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024 from 2 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 1, 2024 at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating.
The Houtzdale Vol. Fire Co. will hold a memorial service Thursday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brisbin.
The family requests donations be made in Melvin's memory to Houtzdale Vol. Fire Co., 601 Good St., Houtzdale, PA 16651; or Clearfield Area Agency on Aging Meals on Wheels Program, 600 Cooper Rd., Curwensville, PA 16833.
