Betty Herbst Obituary
Born Oct. 16, 1921, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. Fager Sr. and Leotta M. (Carbaugh) Fager.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years John C. Herbst on Feb. 28, 2013. They were married Jan. 26, 1944.
She was a graduate of Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in 1943 and was employed as a registered nurse, retiring as a supervisor from Washington County Hospital in 1983.
In 1950, she and her husband John purchased what became Misty Meadows Farms. They were inducted into the Maryland Agricultural Hall of Fame in February 1998 and awarded the Pennsylvania Farmer, Master Farmer Award, in 1981.
She was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ where she was active in a Mary-Martha Ministry of Benevolence with her lifelong friend Gussie Huff. Since being disabled from a stroke, she has attended Jacob's Church on Harbaugh Valley Road.
She was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Ringgold Ruritan Club, Leitersburg Grange Hall for 55 years, the Fellowship of Christian Farmers and the Washington County Nurses Alumni Association.
Betty enjoyed making homemade ice cream, hosting many organizations for picnic dinners which included international delegations from China, Japan, Philippines, Turkey and South America and reunions with fresh fruit pie and homemade ice cream.
She is survived by three sons, John R. Herbst and wife Beverly of Federalsburg, Maryland, Donald C. Herbst and wife Kim of Rigby, Idaho, David L. Herbst and wife Betsy of Ringgold, Maryland, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles W. Fager Jr. and John Elwood Fager and one sister, Arminta Reynolds.
Services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Ringgold Church of Christ with Pastor Richard Daughtridge officiating. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home of Smithsburg, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of The Rural Heritage Museum at 7313 Sharpsburg Pike Boonsboro, MD 21713.
