David Cueva Obituary

Sept. 27, 1951 Feb. 16, 2017

After a courageous battle with cancer, David Cueva, of Vacaville, passed away on the morning of Feb. 16, in the arms of his wife, Mary, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Sept. 27, 1951, in Concord, CA to Jose and Francisca Cueva. David was a lifelong resident of Vacaville. After a stint in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne, David joined the Department of Corrections for 28 years, mostly at CMF Vacaville, where he retired a Correctional Sergeant. While serving at CMF, David helped spearhead the "Bike Project," a program where bicycles were restored and donated to needy children in the community.

Since retiring from CMF, David remained active in community service and was Co-President of the Mexican Open, a charity golf tournament in which proceeds go to Yolo Hospice, college scholarships go to local teens, and other local charities. In the last years of his life, he co-founded Coalition of California State Workers (CCSW), an organization which provides benefits to all State of California employees, especially those he worked with at CMF.

David was a gentle soul with the noblest of hearts. His dedication to his family and friends was unwavering. David was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He loved all animals, especially his dogs. He will be greatly missed by all.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Francisca Cueva; brothers, Tony, Richard and Roberto; and sister, Elva. David leaves behind his loving wife, Mary; his daughter, Leanna (Christopher); his brothers, Joseph (Dora) and Eddie; and sisters, Elvira, Lupe, Rose, Sylvia, and Carolina (George). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

On Wednesday evening, March 1, there will be a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m., with a special tribute and rosary to begin at 6:30 p.m., at Vaca Hills Chapel, 524 Elmira Road, Vacaville. A Catholic Mass for David Cueva will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Vacaville. Burial with military honors will follow on Friday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m., at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.

I have fond memories of Sgt Dave from part of my First Watch time in CMF's Tower-1. God be with his family.

February 28, 2017

I posted the "Foursome" Photo because David was so active in "The Annual Mexican Open". He volunteered so much of his time to this wonderful event. David was such a kind and giving person. I have known him and his family most of my life. His parent were my brother John's Godparents. His brother, Tony, was married to my sister, Terri. Along with David's beloved parents and brothers Tony, Richard, Robert and his sister Elvia, he is with them in Heaven. My prayers are with David and the rest of the Cueva Family. Love, Ann Ingraham
