Elizabeth Poe-Hayes Obituary

June 30, 1948 - May 15, 2016

Elizabeth Ann Poe-Hayes, foodie, collector, wolf lover, accomplished traveler and free spirit, died Sunday May 15. A resident of Vacaville.

Elizabeth, or better known as Liz, was nothing ordinary and her true spirit shined through in her cooking. Some people cook a special meal at holidays, but for Liz everyday was a day worthy of a grand meal. Five course meals were a norm and taking all day to prepare was her passion. She never spared a thing because to her, only the best would do, and she wouldn't let it be any other way, or she would have words for you.

Her cherished collections surrounded her. She loved all things, but her passion for nature and family was evident in everything surrounding her. As you watched her take a walk it was easy to see that nature had placed special items perfectly in her path when she would reach for a leaf or flower. Or the endless piles of artwork she cherished that her grandchildren had made her, every detailed drawing and every scribbled paper meant something to her.

In Native American Indian symbols, the Wolf symbol signified strength, endurance, instinct linked with intelligence, and family values; therefore it would not surprise anyone why she connected so much with the Wolf. Her strength was incomparable, her intelligence was impressive and to have a conversation with her, you would quickly learn that she was rarely wrong. Her strongest trait though was her family. As a mother of three children, Tracy, Robin and Frank, the only thing in the world that even compared to the love of her children, was the love that she had for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The open road called to Liz, and she loved to travel every chance she got. She visited nearly every state and almost every place in between, but none compared to her love of Salem.

Liz was a free spirit that always did things HER way. She never wavered from her belief to do what she wanted, when she wanted, and NO ONE would ever tell her differently. In remaining true to herself, she left this world on her terms and now flies free.

In honor of Liz, her family would like to invite you to her service at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St. on Friday, May 20, at 11 a.m.

Liz was my sister-in-law and my friend. She leaves me and her brother, Darwin, with something I consider almost impossible. Thirteen years ago when I first moved in with Darwin, Liz and Jerry were living there at the time, along with Jesse and his family. Liz had started a tradition of stockings for everyone at x-mas and she made sure I had one along with everyone else. X-mas eve that year Darwin and I retired early but got up in the middle of the night and saw our stockings for the first time. Wow, we were impressed. We looked at each other and at that very moment we decided to hijack our stockings back to the bedroom. We didn't feel any remorse as we went through them and were thrilled at how personalized they were. We felt like we were 5 years old again. A feeling that only Liz could give. I love her for that and Darwin and I have continued Liz's tradition every year since. I love you and miss you my friend, and no matter how busy I get throughout the year, we will always be together every x-mas eve as Darwin and I share this story about you as we rip through our stockings!!

Growing up I got to spend alot of time with her whether it be school functions or camping trips, traveling the states on summer break or for her to take the time to take me to see my mother. She would always cheer me up or help me with what she could as I grew up to become the husband and father I am today. I will always be greatful she took the time she did with me. I hope she will always know that she will forever be loved and missed. Love always little poopies.
