Jonathan Ruff Obituary

Jonathan Andrew Ruff passed Oct. 5th, 2020 at age 59 near Las Vegas in a tragic accident while on a motorcycle trip with a friend. He was doing what he loved. "Jon" was born to Ralph and Evelyn (Jensen) Ruff in Dayton, WA on June 28, 1961. He moved to Fairfield, CA at the age of one and then to Vacaville. He attended Hemlock Elementary, Willis Jepson Jr. High and graduated from Vacaville High in 1979. Jon began playing the trumpet in fourth grade and picked up the French Horn in Junior High; he continued playing both in high school and college. During high school, Jon played First French Horn in the All Bay Area Honor Orchestra which performed with Chuck Mangione. He knew then, that music was going to be his life. Jon went on to study at San Jose City College (1979-1984) and later at the University of Hawaii, Mañoa (1984-1986). During summers in San Jose he played with the Great America "Klown Band" - a perfect fit for Jon! Next, he joined the "Then and Now" show band, playing in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. He returned to the Bay Area from Hawaii and played trumpet for decades in a number of celebrated Salsa bands; most notably Julio Bravo's "Orquesta Salsabor" and "The Pacific Mambo Orchestra." In fact, Jon's many years of hard work and love of the genre, was rewarded with the prestigious Grammy award for Best Tropical Latin album as a member of the Pacific Mambo Orchestra in 2013.In December of 1989, Jon began his memorable U.S. Air Force career. He served with bands at March AFB, CA, Yokota AB Japan, and two tours at Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA. Jon performed, and led, many notable performances throughout the western United States, the Far East and Southeast Asia, and while deployed to the Middle East supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. His passion for music and the USAF mission was front and center for his entire 24-year career and was recognized early on as he was chosen as Air Mobility Command's Bandsman of the Year in 1993. Jon's military awards included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal w/4 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal w/2 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal w/8 oak leaf clusters, Global War of Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon w/Gold border to name a few.Upon retirement at the end of 2013, Jon continued his freelance playing while simultaneously taking a position as Internet Customer Relations representative with Stomvi USA in Southern California. Jon singularly created Stomvi's presence on the Internet, and contributed immeasurably to the growing trumpet education ecosphere online. In 2018, Jon took his broad experience to a new challenge at Milano Music in Mesa, AZ. Again, Jon's passion elevated Milano's Internet presence and created/produced instructional videos that were lauded by local/regional music educators and were just what young students needed during these COVID-challenging times. Jon was truly a one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life personality that cannot be easily characterized. He unapologetically embraced his integrity, work ethic, passion for music and commitment to the AF Band mission no matter whether he created magic or disarray. As a Senior Noncommissioned officer, he was an example of limitlessness caring and selflessness. His inherent goodness was boundless and offered freely to whomever he met. An active member of the trumpet community online, Jon was eulogized by a fellow trumpeter saying, "...The big part of Jon's persona, was in truth, eclipsed by his gentle graciousness and genuine humility." Beyond that, Jon was a loving, devoted father, husband, family man and friend. Jon cannot be replaced and we will never see such a soul again.

I recently came back to trumpet and decided to check back in with my internet teachers: Charlie Porter, Mr. Lewis...and Jon Ruff. In seeing he hadn't posted in years I did a Googe search and found his obituary. Great sadness over came me. I cannot fathom the grief his friends and family must carry.
He IS a good man and I will carry him with me both in music and life.

So sorry to hear about Jon Ruff passing. I remember him when he was in high school and was performing with my brothers, Los Perfidios. I too loss my brother Ron too. This is what Jon said to him:

"Dear Lopez Family,

My heart goes out to you all. I was rushing through dinner to get to a gig when my wife asked me if I knew Ron Lopez. I read with disbelief the notice of Ron´s passing. Driving to my gig I was overwhelmed with emotion, as I am even now. I would not have been where I was doing what I was doing if it had not been for the Lopez family. Ron and Joe took me in as a young musician and adopted me into their family. Ron introduced me to a culture I would have never known. He treated me like a brother and spent many hours hanging out with me. I never got a chance to thank him for everything he did and what it has meant to me. The Lopez family is kind, gracious and full of love. I thank them all for the time they shared with me. Joe, I mourn the loss of your brothers with you. I miss Ron. Tell him I will be there in 15 minutes."
Jon Ruff

No Jon and Ron can perform their music in heaven too. It was a pleasure to have Jon play in Los Perfidios. God Bless

When searching for trumpet instruction on Youtube I came across John's videos which I immediately became a subscriber and began studying his instructions. I found him very knowledgeable, a great trumpet player and a down to earth great guy. I am shocked to have just come across the news of his untimely passing. We have truly lost a wonderful musician and person. Thank you, Mr. Ruff.

I watched a few trumpet instruction videos last night
and was so impressed; his forthrightness and integrity
came through immediately. His dedication, talent, and humility were abundantly evident. I need this help
and he is still here to provide it through his videos.
I am very sorry for your loss to all of those who knew him personally.

I have had the honor to play along side with Jon as a trumpet player wit a band from Vacaville named Sapo Guapo. I learned so much playing along side him gaining range with the high note harmonies we would do and playing the Cali state fair for7nights in a row I feel we were on a blazing trail ! I will truly miss this man and his skills. Until we meet again.....

I just stumbled upon Jon’s YouTube videos last week. Being a trumpet player, I always pause and take a look at what other players/teachers have posted. I immediately recognized Jon as one of those rare breed of players who can not only do it, but teach in a way that the student can absorb and learn it, too. I immediately subscribed to his channel, and it wasn’t until moments ago when I was reading the comments from one of his videos that I learned of his death. I am saddened that he was taken from us so early, but feel blessed to have discovered him. His videos make one feel, besides learning, that he would have just been a gas to hang with.

I’m just starting to get to know him through his videos, and am now committed to watching every one. My younger brother is a retired career Navy chaplain, and just a few days ago I had forwarded Jon’s video about not “overdoing” it, telling my brother, “look at this great guy I found, and his awesome videos,” so I forwarded Jon’s obituary and one of Jon’s other videos to him (he played trumpet until junior high), so he could understand what a great person Jon was, so he could share in what I’m feeling. I’m just getting to know him and I already miss him, but as I said, I feel blessed to have discovered him. Thank you.

So sorry to find out Jon has passed! A few years ago Jon sold me my Stomvi Titan ( I believe it was first owned by Javier Gonzalez.) Jon was a great help in setting me up with a mouthpiece and encouraging me as a "comeback player." I was intending to get in touch with him again for some advice, at least I can still watch his great videos. My condolences to his family and many friends and colleagues. He will be missed.

I am one of the trumpet players in the community who was saddened and suprised by this accident happening to Jon. I was able to play with Jon on various gigs, mostly with Randy Biaji. We were mostly working during a time when the "network" of trumpet players would trade gigs, sub for each other, get new players in the network, and basically get all of the work done in the area. Jon would freely exchange information and new developments in trumpet and mouthpiece design and materials. He was a great resource for new and cutting edge technology associated with trumpets and mouthpieces, and we would exchange ideas about practicing regiemes and breathing. Interspersed with all of this would be moments of humor and intuitive wit from Jon. I never heard him give a bad report or spread rumors about anyone, and he had that balance between work and doing an excellent, professional job, while maintining a sense of humor and perspective about it all. My condolescences to Jons family. Accompanying you in your loss. I will miss Jon too.

Jon was a wonderfull friend, always made you feel important, and had a lot to say. He was extremely humorous and fun to be around. A super talented energetic musician with a zest for life that I truly admired. He was a family guy always taking care of his beautiful wife and three children first.

We served in the USAF Band together and had so many laughs and great times together on the road and as neighbors in Vacaville.

We all will greatly miss you Jon!
