Richard was born in Napa in 1940. He spent his childhood and much of his early adulthood living and working in Napa. At the age of 18, he bought his first house and began his career as a carpet layer, working for Blackney & Marsh. He worked for 25 years and with his keen eye for perfection, he learned not only the fine art of carpet laying, but also carpentry and home repair. These skills came easily to him and, eventually, he became known as the man who could fix anything.
In 1984, Richard went to work for the Solano Count Sheriff's Department. His work there was every bit as impressive as his carpentry skills and he quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to correctional sergeant.
For 17 years, he did his best to meet the needs of the department and one of his greatest sources of pride was that during those 17 years, he only missed work five days due to illness. He was a tireless worker, and one who was (after his retirement) always greeted with a hearty handshake or hug from the people who had worked with him. Those handshakes and hugs made his day and he always rested peacefully because he knew, in his heart, that he had consistently done his best for them.
Following his retirement in 2000, Richard finally had the opportunity to embrace his lifelong passion for woodworking. Those who knew him well will probably remember him as always standing in his garage at his trusty Shop Smith, sawing and routing unbelievable custom cabinets and unique creations dreamed up by his friends and family.
He could recreate exact duplicate pieces of furniture from a photograph, match existing pieces which needed replacing or repair, or simply come up with one-of-a-kind creation which he jokingly said "it may not be pretty, but it's stout and it'll be here long after I'm gone." He was a modest man ... because everything he created was absolutely beautiful and he was considered to be a master wood craftsman.
He was also a member of the Vacaville Elk's Lodge, past Wagonmaster for the Rov'n Elk's R.V. Club and a 15 year member for the Vaca Employee's Bowling League.
Richard is survived by his two daughters, Janelle (Lisa) and Sherri, and his two stepsons, Nathan (Nicole) and Clay. He was also blessed with four cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Alisha, Kaydin and Chayse. Additionally, he leaves behind his sister Bernice (Bob) and her two children, Barbie and Ken; sister-in-law, Katie and her two children, Josh and Jenner; his father, Joseph, and his brother Dennis. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy.
Richard will be missed, oh so much, by his family, friends and neighbors. There is now an unbelievable void in all our lives. We invite all of the cherished people in his life to attend his memorial service which will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Vacaville's Community Presbyterian Church at 425 Hemlock St. Refreshments will be shared in the church's Social Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, whose Web site is www.alzfdn.org, or to the Community Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Laurie,
I was so shocked when I heard about Rich. I didn’t hear about him until this Tuesday.
I would never have seen that coming. We haven’t talked in a few months and with me working nights for two weeks I’ve been out of touch with things in the neighborhood.
I’ll miss bugging him for advice on how to fix projects that I already screwed up. He always found time to talk or help. I remember once he tried to help me straighten this shelf I made for my daughters computer desk! When I started it was 2 feet tall. When we finished it was 1 foot tall and still wobbled. We just laughed. I will certainly miss him. If there were more people like Rich the world would be so much better. Rest in peace my friend.

Love to the Imboden Family, all of you. I remember having so much fun in Clearlake, when Richard and Dennis would stay up and play cards until crazy hours. Joe and Bill had homes next to each other and we all looked forward to the fun weekends at the lake. I think of that time often. Richard will be missed so much. Big hugs to his beautiful daughters.

When we think of Mr. Richard we think of Jesus's words, "So you want to take first place? Then take last place. Be the servant of all." Not that Mr.Richard ever wanted to take first place, but that Rich was the most serving man we know. He served our family, he served our neighbors, he had an amazing servant heart.Our hearts ache with loss because he so touched our hearts with his fatherly and grandfatherly and neighborly love.We will miss you so. Dear Laurie and Imboden Family;
There are unfortunately so few people in this world who you know truly care about you and would do anything for you. Rich was one of those individuals. His smile would light the way through any situation, his wit never ending and his love for his family and friends unwavering. He was so talented in all of the "extra" things he found time to work on. His kindness and generosity, his attention to detail and his words of encouragement will only be a few of the reasons we will miss him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I truly beleive that we are ALL better people for having even just a little time with Richard in our lives.
Love,
Don and Tina Davis

If there is anyones life that should be celebrated it's Richards; he was one of the most caring and loyal people I have ever known; I'm proud to be considered his friend, he will always have that very special place in my heart. On the lighter side; Richard was so proud to have worked for the Sheriff's Office and one of his goals was to be promoted to sergeant; little did we know, when he accomplished his goal, one of the things that made him the happiest was, "NO more laundry exchange." Whatever his reason, we are grateful to have had Richard as a supervisor; his compassion for people was rare. I love and will miss him and I know he is in a better place. To Laurie and Richards Family, May you find peace and strengh. Peg Rourk

Rich was truely a good friend. He was a very selfless person, who without hesitation would always be there to help others in their time of need.
Rich was the type of person who when entering a room would make it that much brighter. He was highly respected and loved by those who knew him.
All though his loss is great, those he touched in life will cherish the memories and time spent with him. He will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.Richard was a good man amongst men.He was strong of will and gentle of heart. With his quick wit,and warm smile he was always able to bring comfort and a joy to anyone who reached out to him.His talent for finding humor in most situations was what made him a great Sergeant. Rich knew if we couldn't laugh, we might have to cry, and he would have none of that!I will always remember him and his mischievous grin! May your memories bring you comfort.

What can one say when a dear friend has gone on to a much better spot before us? Heaven is definitely a better place upon welcoming their new family member, but oh, how we miss Rich!
We will miss our late night "hand-and-foot" evenings (where the gals always knocked the socks off the guys)! We will miss our Christmas decoration contests (and the ever famous disco ball which outdid our new holiday window fixture). We will miss our shared motor home trips, Mexican Riviera cruises, chalk drawings in the driveway, joint venture woodworking projects, wonderful barbecues, and laugh-till-you-drop dinner dates. But... most of all, we will miss Rich's sweet spirit, warm smile, and "I'll always be there for you" attitude.
Rejoice in your new clothes, dear Richard. And.. save us a spot!

We met Rich just a couple of years ago through my old (and I mean that in the nicest way) friend, Laurie, but he fast became one of our favorite people through his charm, humor, and kindness. I have a beautiful piece of his woodworking art, and he even made a replacement ear for my folk art cow that matched the chewed one exactly! I know Heaven will be a more fun place with Rich there regaling them all with his stories. Laurie, we're here when you need us.

What a joy knowing Richard! We loved his visits to Oregon with Laurie and Clay. I can still see him shake his head when he saw what a crazy family he had joined, wholeheartedly. Sorry to say, Laurie, Rich joined right in on the duk-a-boars. He happily unlocked motorhome and car doors for us. He enjoyed keeping the jokes secret right along with us. Of course, I am sure he enjoyed getting even with us, also, Decorating our yard when we were gone!!! We hung up the IN$ANITY sign that he made us and will cherish it always. We love you Laurie and will miss Richard so much. xoxoxo

What can one say, Rich will be missed. He was a person who believed the best of everyone. No matter whatever his problems he was there for anyone who needed him. Honest caring people like Rich are hard to find. I will always remember the kindness he showed me when I needed someone to talk to. For those of you who did not know Rich well all I can say is you missed out on meeting a special person. He will be missed. I know he is happy now and that I will one day see my friend again. Until we meet again. Kevin

Our hearts hurt so much because Rich is gone now. We will miss driving past the house and seeing him working on the RV or some beautiful piece of furniture, waving back to us with a wide grin and a happy heart. I think our 7-year old son summed it best when he said, "Mommy, God just needs Mr. Rich to help build a house in heaven." We are so blessed that our lives have been touched by Rich.
