Allen Rankin

1928 - 2017

Allen J. Rankin, age 88 of Shade passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Born July 30, 1928 in Coolspring, PA, he was the son of the late John Allen Rankin and Eliza Giannopoulos Rankin.


He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 as a wheel mechanic. After his military service, he worked as a mechanic for many years and then worked as a coal miner until his retirement. He was a member of the Shade Community Center and the Shade United Methodist Church.


Allen is survived by two daughters, Sandee Diamond of Cleveland and Kelly Coen of Shade; seven grandchildren- Candace Diamond, Ethan Pierce, Emily Pierce, David Pierce, Jr., Shanea Pierce, Zachary Coen and Hannah Kelbaugh; a great granddaughter, Brooklyn Diamond Walls; a brother, Robert Rankin of Athens; a sister, Charlotte (Dave) Thompson of Albany; three brothers in law and sisters in law, Amy & Ralph Calvert of Shade, Judy & Kenny Smart of Albany and Nora & Don Caudill of Lancaster.


Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Coen Rankin in 2015; a son Kevin Coen; a sister, Annaestelle Babbs; and two brothers, John Poulos and Maurice Rankin.


Funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor Malcolm Grueser officiating. Burial will be in the Garden Cemetery, Lodi Township. Friends may call Saturday 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and Albany VFW Post 9398 Honor Guards at the cemetery.
