Robert Mazzola Obituary

ROBERT MAZZOLA, MD Robert D. Mazzola, M.D., 72, of Harleysville, passed away May 13, 2013 at his home. He fought a courageous battle against leukemia and enjoyed six years with his family following a successful bone marrow transplant. He is survived by his wife, Maureen A. (Noon) Mazzola. The two would have celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary this coming August. Born April 1, 1941 in Philadelphia, Robert was a son of the late Catherine (Imbesi) and Donato G. Mazzola, Esq. Robert attended the Waldron Academy and later graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Class of 1958. He earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University in 1962 and went on to graduate from Temple Medical School, Class of 1966, where he earned his doctorate in medicine. Following graduation, Dr. Mazzola served his country as a Major in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970 and upon his honorable discharge began his medical career in Lansdale. He joined Lansdale Medical Group in 1970 and continued to practice with TriValley Primary Care in Lansdale until his retirement in 2005. He will be greatly missed by his beloved patients, to whom he was most dedicated for many years, even making house calls late in his practice. Dr. Mazzola will be remembered as a true renaissance man; he enjoyed everything from fly fishing to opera. For many years, he was involved with the Souderton-Harleysville Game, Fish, & Forestry Association and also the Al Caucci's Delaware River Club. He was an avid reader and loved gourmet cooking and dining. A talented piano and banjo artist, Robert also enjoyed games, especially Poker and WOW. He was a longtime and dedicated member of Corpus Christi Church in Lansdale. In addition to his wife, Dr. Mazzola is survived by his son, Matthew A. Mazzola and his wife, Mandi, of Oakland, TN; two beloved grandchildren, Rhane Catherine and Giovanna Marie Mazzola; a brother, William J. Mazzola and his wife, Anne, of Philadelphia; a sister, Santa Cucinotta and her husband, Salvatore, of Wynnewood; three nephews and four nieces; and two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Friends may greet the family from 8:30 to 10:15AM Saturday, June 1, at Corpus Christi Church, 900 Sumneytown Pike, Lansdale, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Mazzola's memory to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605. Dr. Mazzola's family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the healthcare professionals caring for him, including Dr. Selena Luger, along with her entire staff, at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Dr. Jerome Sag in Lansdale, and the Penn Wissahickon Hospice staff, especially Leslie and Theresa. Arrangements are by Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
