James Baute Obituary

James Lynn Baute, 84, died on February 28, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at home. Jim was born August 21, 1940, in Columbus, IN to the late Oscar and Ruth (Kobbe) Baute. Jim graduated from Columbus High School in 1958. He met the love of his life, Martha Jean Wheeler, at age 8 on the school bus. They married March 12, 1960, and happily built a family together for over 64 years, until his passing. A devoted and hardworking man, he farmed for decades and enjoyed working at Cummins Engine Company for 43 years before retiring. Jim was a faithful and giving man who served his community as a charter member at Faith Lutheran Church and a board member at First Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau, and Just Friends. He delighted in playing Santa Claus and bringing cheer to many.

Jim was preceded in death by his brother Dale Baute, his sister Karen Booher, and his daughter Deanna Baute. He will be forever missed by his loving wife; his children Susan Baute, Mariann (Steve) Gutke, and Brad (Sonja) Baute; his grandchildren Andrew and Emily Gutke; and his great-grandson Elias Whittle.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11:00 a.m. to time of service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Just Friends Adult Day Care or the donor's choice of charity. Arrangements entrusted to Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
