JoAnn Meek Obituary

JoAnn C. Meek died peacefully at home on October 19, 2025. JoAnn was born on June 21, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the youngest child of Joseph L. and Jessie Mae (Watson) Cummins. She married Gordon Meek on January 16, 1971. They were married over 50 years when Gordon passed away in November of 2021.

JoAnn graduated from Columbus High School in 1960 and the Indiana Business College in 1962. After graduation, she began working as a chair-side dental assistant. JoAnn worked for dentists in Bloomington, Indiana and Indianapolis, Indiana before settling in for the rest of her career in the office of John C. Libke. She ended her career as Dr. Libke's practice manager.

After retiring in 2002, JoAnn and Gordon enjoyed traveling, serving others and spending time with their three granddaughters. JoAnn was proud of each of her granddaughters and supported them in all they did. She especially appreciated having lunch with at least one of them every Friday. Every winter she would knit each of them a pair of colorful, warm wool socks.

JoAnn had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus. She did her best to live out that faith every day. JoAnn was a founding member of the Columbus Area Emmaus Community. She learned how to apply God's word in her life, and share it with others, from both Precept and Bible Study Fellowship classes. JoAnn was always willing to listen to and pray for those around her no matter their circumstances. Her faith provided the strength she needed to be an exceptional caregiver to her husband as dementia tightened its ugly grip on him.

One of JoAnn's most special blessings was being part of Mag Seven, a group of seven like-minded, strong, faithful women. These women were lifelong friends who supported, encouraged, challenged and prayed for each other daily. Mag Seven's care and concern helped make JoAnn's last days even more special. They were forever friends and JoAnn was privileged to know them.

Survivors include her sons Joe (Carla) Meek, Matt (Christy) Meek, granddaughters Haley (Scott) Anderson, Katlin Meek, Ella Meek and great-grandson Steven Anderson. JoAnn is also survived by her nieces Denisa Mallot, Marcia Gurno, Diane (Terry) Rick and Julie Stepp. Her parents, brother John Albert Cummins and sisters Virgina Mae Burton and Margaret Cummins-Schaefer all died before she did.

Friends can visit with JoAnn's family from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home at 1029 Washington Street in Columbus, Indiana. JoAnn's funeral will be at 11:00am Friday, October 24, 2025 at the funeral home with visitation an hour before.

A live stream of the funeral service may be viewed at 11am Friday at barkesweaverglick.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or the Greater Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

A private graveside service will be held at Garland Brook Cemetery where JoAnn will be laid to rest next to her late husband, Gordon.
