Richard Ellis "Rick" Walter

Richard Ellis "Rick" Walter, 63, of Columbus, passed from this life Sunday, November 30, 2025, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. Born June 18, 1962, in Danville, Indiana, Rick was the son of Jack Thomas Walter and Nancy June Martin Deasy.

Rick served in the U.S. Army until 1984 when he returned home to Columbus. Rick spent many fulfilling years as a dedicated employee at Target, where his work ethic and friendly demeanor made him a favorite among both colleagues and customers. His commitment to community was evident through his active involvement with the First Christian Church, where he was a member of the 3M's Sunday School Class and the Thomas Small Group. Rick's faith and the fellowship he found within his church community were sources of great comfort and strength throughout his life.

A former member of Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), Rick was always eager to share his journey and encourage others in their health and wellness goals. Rick had the ability to connect with all different kinds of people and form long-term friendships. He was truly a "people person" who enjoyed keeping up with friends and making new relationships.

Rick's zest for life extended to his leisure activities. He was an avid volleyball and ping pong player, bringing his competitive spirit and laughter to the court. His passion for his cats was well-known; he often shared stories of their antics and the joy they brought to his home. Rick was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the IU Hoosiers, the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers.

Rick is survived his mother and stepfather, Nancy and Jim Deasy of Bellingham, Washington; sister, Lauren Walter of Fishers; and many dear friends

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Jack T. Walter and his brother, Donald Thomas Walter.

Rick's celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Steve Yeaton will officiate. In keeping with Rick's wishes, cremation will take place following his celebration. Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private inurnment will take place at the Garland Brook Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or First Christian Church.
