Robert David "Dave" Carter

1944 - 2025

Robert David "Dave" Carter, 81, of Columbus passed from this life on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 7:15 a.m. at The Belmont Health and Rehabilitation due to complications from Parkinsons Disease. Born on April 3, 1944, in Washington, Indiana, he was a beloved son to the late John Robert and Opal Hochesang Carter. Dave was a pillar of strength and love for his family and community, and his kind-hearted nature touched the lives of many.

Dave married the love of his life, Karen L. McClintock, on December 22, 1968. Their cherished union was graced with love, laughter, and memorable adventures for 56 wonderful years. Together, they raised a family that was held together by the enduring bonds of unconditional support and affection. Dave's legacy continues through his wife, Karen L. Carter of Columbus; son, Mike (Megan) Carter of Greenville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Lawson Carter and Shelby (Cody) Melton, whom he adored; and his sister-in-law, Paulette McClintock, all of whom survive him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bob Carter; and a brother-in-law, Rick McClintock.

Dave was a dedicated educator who inspired countless young minds over the course of 32 years as an elementary school teacher before his retirement in 1999. His passion for teaching was matched only by his zest for the outdoors. An avid trap shooter, quail hunter, and fisherman, Dave found great joy and serenity in the outdoors.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Dave would undoubtedly describe him as loving and kind. He was a man of integrity and gentle wisdom, a loyal friend, and a nurturing mentor to the many whose paths he crossed.

In keeping with Dave's wishes cremation will take place and family and friends may gather for visitation Saturday, January 3rd from 11-1p.m. at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.

Private inurnment will take place at Garland Brook Mausoleum.

In memory of Dave memorial contributions may be given to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
