Adele Handlers

Adele Handlers passed away peacefully in her home in Ridgefield on December 24, 2018 She grew up in Danbury, lived in New York City, and moved to Ridgefield where she raised her family and resided for the past 46 years

Adele worked most of her life as an educator of children with special needs She was a teacher, learning disabilities specialist, had a private education consulting practice in Ridgefield, and finished her career as a school administrator at NY Hospital in White Plains

She attended the University of Connecticut as an undergraduate, earned a master's degree from Herbert H Lehman College, and both masters and doctorate degrees from Columbia University Teachers College

She was an avid world traveler and lover of music, literature and art She became an active hiker mid-life after winning a grand prize trip trekking to Mt Everest in Nepal She was a lifelong supporter of the women's rights movement, various progressive causes, and human rights

Adele is remembered for her independent spirit, principled convictions, and thoughtfulness She was a loving mother and grandmother, and a devoted sister, aunt and great-aunt

She is preceded by her mother Rose Londa Heyman, father Milton Heyman, and sister Donna Wasloff She is survived by her twin children Alex Handlers of Lafayette, CA and Nina Handlers-Lurie of Lexington, MA along with their spouses Andrea and Ben, grandchildren Eva and Jasper Handlers and Maya and Eli Lurie, her brother Joseph Heyman of Ridgefield, her partner Aaron Marcus of Stratford, as well as many close friends and extended family

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced by Kane Funeral Home of Ridgefield Contributions in Adele's memory may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union
