Robert D. Banz
Robert D. Banz "Bob", beloved husband, father, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in hospice in Connecticut on his 91st birthday. Born on November 1, 1933 in Chicago, Robert lived a life filled with joy, adventure, and an unwavering optimistic spirit.
While studying at Columbia, Bob met the love of his life, Nancy Wagner, during her nursing training at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. They married in 1957 and enjoyed a loving partnership for 64 years until Nancy's passing in 2021. Their bond was a testament to unconditional love and companionship.
After graduating from Columbia in 1955, Bob proudly served as a Navy pilot, where he traveled the world and honed his skills before transitioning to the reserves. His dedication to service and passion for aviation were hallmarks of his character.
Robert furthered his education with an MBA from Northwestern University, and later earned his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation from Boston University, after retiring from Polaroid Corporation.
Bob was the kind of person who approached life with enthusiasm, always eager to try something new. Whether it was picking up skiing in his 40s, golfing nearly every day in retirement, or diving into heated domino games, he embraced each experience with a cheerful spirit. Even his attempt at sailing was made with gusto. His approach to the dock, at what can only be described as near ramming speed took most by surprise, but he always stuck the landing! He was a very happy man, except when working with power tools, which led friends and family to give him a wide berth during weekend projects. Bob's sense of adventure and humor were undeniable. His willingness to jump into each activity, even if it didn't always go smoothly, was a testament to his zest for life.
Robert and Nancy moved from New England to Florida and lived in Venice for over twenty years. They cherished the friends they made, the welcoming community, and the beautiful weather that enhanced their retirement years.
He is survived by his three children: Robert D. Banz Jr. (deceased) and Anne Banz (wife), Vicki Mueller and Robert Mueller (husband), and Richard Banz and Nancy Steinman-Banz (wife). He was a proud grandfather to three granddaughters: Audrey Rose Isom, Christina Isom Wilburn, and Sedona Banz, as well as three great-grandsons: Benjamin Wilburn, Calen Wilburn, and Tobin Wilburn, all of whom meant the world to him.
Robert also leaves behind best friend and constant companion, his rescue dog, Mason. Together, they shared many joyful moments, and now Mason is busy chasing around his extended family.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at a later date, prior to his burial in Barrington, RI. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Red Cross, reflecting Robert's spirit of giving and love for others. Kane Funeral Home, Ridgefield, CT, is in care of arrangements.
