David Hack Obituary
David Bruce Hack, born in Sacramento on February 13, 1940, passed away December 21, 2022, in Silver Spring, MD, following a lengthy hospitalization with multiple complications. At his side were his beloved wife of 40 years, Pamela Silverwood of Silver Spring, and their much-loved son, Andrew Silverwood Hack of North Charleston, SC.
David was the son of Raymond and Edris Probstfield Hack and the grandson of James Henry and Josephine Hack, who all moved from Fargo, ND, during the 1930s to a chicken ranch on U Street in Rio Linda. (David's grandparents and parents continued to live on U Street until their individual deaths.)
After attending Rio Linda Elementary and Rio Linda Jr. High, David graduated from Grant Union High School in 1957 where he was an enthusiastic member of Grant's outstanding student choir and a cross country runner. As a youth in Rio Linda, David was active in the town's 4-H Club, the American Baptist Church at 10th and O Streets and its Baptist Youth Fellowship.
Following high school, David attended University of Redlands in Southern California on scholarship, graduating magna cum laude in Physics in 1961. During college he continued his love of music as a tenor in the University's Concert Choir. After graduation, David spent several years living and working in the Bay Area. His degree in physics qualified him for his first post-college position at an early experimental nuclear reactor facility in the East Bay. He then accepted a position with the Congressional Research Service in Washington, DC, as a research analyst specializing in alternative energy. David worked there until he retired.
David is lovingly remembered by younger members of his family for his kind support of their development and education. He was a good mentor on a variety of subjects that helped expand their horizons. Subscriptions to world news or art magazines sometimes generously appeared from him. A tennis racket or bicycle were thoughtfully given as encouragement to exercise and keep life in balance.
David leaves his widow, Pam, their son, Andrew, daughter-in-law, Keo, grandchildren Tristan and Emily. He also leaves his siblings, Mary Lou Hack Mongan of Sausalito and Douglas Walter Hack of Roseville, plus numerous nieces and nephews. (David's older sister, Rae Evelyn Hack Pimley Haynes, predeceased him, dying in Phoenix, AZ, with Parkinson's Disease on September 24, 2021.)
