Virginia Tipton Obituary

Virginia May Tipton
Jefferson City - Virginia May Tipton, 94, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021 peacefully at home.
She was born in a log house on September 3, 1927 in Phelps County, Mo., North of Beulah and near Mathis Hollow. She was a daughter of Frederick David and Maudie May (Reagan) Mathis. She was married on October 22, 1949 in Jefferson City, to John H. Tipton who passed away in 2009.
She attended elementary school at Elm Springs one room schoolhouse (walking both ways). She was a 1945 graduate of Rolla High School. After graduation she worked for the Health Department in Houston, Mo. and then Jefferson City. When she first moved to Jefferson City, she roomed at 507A Broadway and her two roommates, Virginia (Swearingen) Oetting and Josie (Nichols) McLaughlin, became friends for life. After marriage and a move to Mexico, Mo. she worked as a secretary and time keeper for A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. Upon returning to Jefferson City, Virginia worked for almost 20 years for the Jefferson City School District as a secretary in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) School in the Nichols Career Center, retiring in 1989.
Virginia was baptized in Little Piney Creek near Yancy Mills and was a member at First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, and then Faith Lutheran Church in her later years.
Virginia was a talented quilter, and made many quilts for family and friends. An avid reader, Virginia was always learning and encouraging others to do the same. She enjoyed the many years of traveling with her family, and using those adventures to learn.
Virginia is survived by: her children, Carol Mauthe (John) of Jefferson City, and Kenneth Tipton (Kristin Allan) of New Bloomfield; and three grandchildren, Brian Mauthe (Heather), Joseph Mauthe (Tiphanie) and Aidan Tipton.
She was preceded in death by: her loving husband, John; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Gertie (Trout) Mathis; and sister, Nellie Pauline Lingo (who passed too soon).
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Tony Alter officiating. Masks are optional.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Food Bank of Central Missouri.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary.
