Cecilia Maulding Obituary
Jerry was born Nov. 17, 1931, in Williamson County to Lloyd and Anna (Jurgaitis) Penland.
She worked many years as an accountant for SIU in Carbondale before retirement in 1998. Before that, she worked several years as a census taker for the US Census Bureau, taught for a brief period at Vergennes and volunteered her time at the YMCA.
She enjoyed working outside and tending to her yard as well as spending time with her family. She was an avid reader and had a keen sense of humor. She was former president of the SIU Civil Service Bargaining Organization.
Survivors include daughters, Lou Ann Wade and husband, Charley, of Houston, Texas, Anita Thomason and husband, Keith, of Benton, and Wendy McCluskie and husband, Devin, of Herrin; sons, Earl Maulding of Hollywood, Fla., Dale Maulding and wife, Lisa, of Atlanta, Ga., and Gerald Maulding and wife, Erin, of Atlanta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, Justin Wade of Houston, Texas, Ayla Maulding of Hollywood, Fla., Henry Cardwell V and fiancée, Kelsey Schlueter, of St. Louis, Mo., Zac Thomason and Noah Thomason of Benton, Nathan Maulding and Hayden Maulding of Atlanta, Ga., Eli Maulding, Libby Maulding and Quinn Maulding of Atlanta, Ga., Gavin McCluskie, Lauren McCluskie and Luke McCluskie of Herrin; great-grandchildren, Henry "Little Tommy" Cardwell VI of St. Louis and CJ Wade, Patrice Williams and Kailey Wade of Houston, Texas; sister, Josephine Patterson of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lloyd Penland.
The family considers it a privilege to have had Jerry as their mother. She will be greatly missed but she will always be a part of them.
It was her wish to be cremated. A private memorial service will be Friday, March 29.
At the family's request, memorials may be made to your local library in lieu of flowers.
Arrangements were made at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

Anita I am so sorry to hear about your mom. I had no idea when I saw you Saturday. I knew you and your family in school but then was lucky enough to get to know your mom working with her in CCFA.

Anita, and family, even though your mom had 6 childreen of her own, she always made me feel like I was a part of her family. There was a lot of laughter at mealtime, which was made even more special by your mom's gooseberry pie. Reflections of your sweet and sassy mom and family at 2203 Clay Street are a huge part of so many people's memories. We'll cherish her always.
