Saying goodbye to a friend is never easy... but saying goodbye to a teammate and guy I looked up to is extremely difficult. 1982 MHS Graduate and Red Devil Standout Athlete Clay Brewer passed away on Saturday, February, 19, 2022. While I was in high school, I played understudy to him as a catcher on the baseball team, point guard on the basketball team, and defensive back on the gridiron. In my eyes, Clay was always one of the coolest guys around. Though he was 2 years ahead of me in school, he always treated me like an equal... both then and throughout the rest of our time together!
Clay's senior athletic class may be the BEST to ever go through the MHS Halls... In football, they had a perfect 9-0 regular season and went 2 rounds deep in the playoffs. In basketball, they played East St. Louis in the IHSA AA Super-Sectional. And in baseball, they played Edwardsville for the right to go to the IHSA State Tournament! Clay and his teammates on the 1981 football team were inducted into the Red Devils Hall of Fame in 2019!
