Dennis Hannon Obituary
Dennis was born Sept. 29, 1947, in Chicago, to Richard Joseph and Edna Bernice (Stark) Hannon.
He married Dianne Lynn Shroka on June 13, 1970, in Skokie. She survives and is of Carbondale.
Other survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Scott (Heather) Hannon of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer (Josh) Mostyn of Palm Harbor, Fla.; brother, Mike (Mary) Hannon of Park Ridge; sister, Phyllis (Ron) Pierce of Palm Harbor, Fla.; granddaughter, Avary and stepgrandson, Ethan Gurley; two sisters-in-law, Pamela Blair of South Elgin and Julie Shroka of Grayslake; and mother-in-law, Adeline Opielinski of Des Plaines.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Kenneth H. Shroka.
Dennis served in the Navy as an Airman, from July 1, 1971 to Sept. 23, 1972, and he retired in 1990 as Chief Yeoman.
He received his first bachelor's degree from Loyola University, and his second bachelor's degree from SIU in Applied Science and Art. He received his master's of public administration from SIU. He graduated with a certificate from DeVry Institute for Home Electronic Systems II.
Dennis was an assistant professor for the SIU Aviation (AVTECH). He received Teacher of the Year from 2009 to 2010 and 2011 to 2012.
He was a member of the American Radio Relay League Inc.; Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS); Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA); Experimental Aircraft Association; and a Cub Scout Den Leader from 1984 to 1987.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 10, in Grand Ave Christian Church in Carbondale, with the Rev. Jon Hughes officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale.
Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the SIU Foundation in care of Aviation Technologies Development and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Met KB9PAZ during preparation for an airport disaster drill. He was an Illinois Emergency Station and he was part of the team to do ham radio computer communications to make sure the finish line of the River to River Relay announced the finishers properly. RIP, KB9PAZ, SK

I just heard the sad news of Dennis' passing. I am stunned and saddened, and I am particularly saddened for Diane and family. Dennis was a great guy. I am not sure how long I have known him - 20 years, maybe?
In the mid-90's, I went through some difficult times, and Dennis was one of the people who helped me to navigate to a safe port. He and some friends and I would meet every Saturday morning and share our experience, strength, and hope with each other, and I always looked forward to seeing him there.
Dennis always asked about Beth (my wife) and Louie (my dog). He had a way of making me know that he really was interested in my life.
I know that I share the sentiment with many other people we knew in common - and whom Dennis met and helped along the road of happy destiny - when I say that Dennis will most certainly be missed.

I am very sorry to hear this news of Dennis. He was a very pleasant person to work with in amateur radio. I will miss the days when he worked the MARS station, as I worked the amateur station and commercial radio in Jerseyville, during the CureD'Cure races.
