George Butcher Obituary

MURPHYSBORO -- George E. Butcher, 84, passed away at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, in Carbondale Rehab and Nursing Center.

Visitation for Mr. Butcher will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro.

George was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Murphysboro to Thomas Butcher and Ida Mae (Jarrett) Butcher.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Butcher retired as an appliance repairman, working for Montgomery Ward and later retired after working at Pinckneyville High School.

George was a wood worker, enjoyed being outside, and loved doing things with his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He married Martha (Gregory) Butcher, and she preceded him in death Dec. 17, 1957; and he later married Melba (Kiefer) Butcher.

Mr. Butcher is survived by seven children, Gerald Butcher and his wife, Charlene Butcher, of Pinckneyville, Leonard Kiefer and his wife, Sharon Kiefer, of Sparta, Michael Kiefer, and Elizabeth Cornett and her husband, Glenn Cornett, all of Marissa, Alice Westerman, and Barbara Seyferth and her husband, David Seyferth, all of Sparta, and Georgia Helfer and her husband, Gary Helfer, of Makanda; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Will of Carbondale.

He was preceded in death by four children, Donald Butcher, Mary Jean Butcher, Janet Butcher and Glenna Moutria; one grandson; two brothers, Luther Butcher and Leonard Butcher; and his parents.

I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember him as "Butch" and he always showed us nothing but kindness. He was first married to my mom's cousin Martha and we were all very close. I am sorry to hear about George , I knew him when he worked at Montgomery wards I was a classmate of his daughter, whe she was killed in the tornado in the 8th grade. I worked with George, at Essex Int. as a maintainance man,he was my boss. You have my sympathy , Howard W. Varnum
