Michael Phillips Obituary

HERRIN - Michael Allen Phillips, 51, passed away June 24, 2010, in St. Louis University Hospital, after a courageous battle after major brain surgery.

Michael was born June 18, 1959, in Herrin, to Al and Rose (Alecci) Phillips.

Mike attended Herrin High School and John A. Logan College and then began his career in the motorcycle business world, where he was highly successful and the owner of numerous national racing awards. From the early '70s to 1988, he drag raced motorcycles and won four national championships and from 1989 to 2006 he raced in National Modified Midgett Association. He then became the owner and operator of Phillips Pro Cycle in Carbondale.

He will be forever remembered by all his friends in the racing world and by his devoted family members, Dom and Elizabeth Alecci, Lisa Alecci Hartel (Steve), Lynn Alecci Wardell (Rick), Dr. Carl Getto (Sheila) and Don Yewell.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends are invited to a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2010, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, with Monsignor Ken Schaeffer officiating. Burial will be in San Carlo Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to "Make a Wish Foundation."
