CHRISTOPHER - Robert Louis "Bob" Salingue, 71, passed away at 4:45 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, with his family at his side.
Bob was born Sept. 14, 1938, in Boulder, Colo., to Louis and Eva (Bavier) Salingue.
He married Esther Flowers on June 1, 1957, in First Christian Church in Zeigler. She survives in Christopher.
Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Dr. Kent Harshbarger of Centerville, Ohio; two grandchildren, Kristian and Karoline Harshbarger of Centerville; a sister, Angeline Noto of Zeigler; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Phillip Salingue of Martin, Mich. and John and Michelle Salingue of Christopher; his mother-in-law, Mildred Flowers of Zeigler; two sisters-in-law, Doris Cash and her husband, Arley, of Royalton and Venita Rea of Mulkeytown; a brother-in-law, Wynn Holland of Christopher; an uncle, Zidore Ceane of Zeigler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Lester Flowers; a sister, Sadie Holland; and a brother-in-law, Frank Noto.
Mr. Salingue was of the Protestant Faith. He graduated from Zeigler High School the class of 1956. In 1956 Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood, spent time at Fort Dix, N.J., and continued active interest in serving his country throughout his life, including military honors for deceased veterans. After his marriage, he worked at Sanitary Market in Christopher as a butcher. He was a Charter Member and Past President of the Zeigler Jaycees. He was elected Supervisor of the Six-Mile Township in 1967, and served four years, and was active in Zeigler City Government for many years. Along with his wife, Esther, he ran "Bob's Market" in Royalton for five years. He worked one year for Pepsi Cola in Marion and in 1977, he began working at Inland Coal Company in Sesser, He retired in 2000 from Consolidated Coal Company. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family (especially his two grandchildren), fishing, wood working and gardening in his spare time after retirement.
Funeral services for Mr. Salingue will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, in Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with the Rev. Charles L. Epperly officiating. Burial will be in Zeigler Cemetery, with military graveside rites courtesy of Zeigler and Orient American Legions, West Frankfort VFW and Marion National Guard Flag Detail. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
