Shirley Clayton Obituary

MURPHYSBORO - Shirley Clayton, 77, passed away at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Shirley was born on April 13, 1936, in Murphysboro, to Ted Hart and Hazel (Johnson) Hart.

She operated a daycare in her home for 20 years. She liked to do crafts including ceramics, sewing, painting pictures and she loved to read.

Mrs. Clayton was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in DeSoto.

Shirley married Edward J. Clayton on December 18, 1953, in Murphysboro, and he survives.

Survivors include six children, Teresa Porter and her husband, Bill Porter of Murphysboro, Patti Rosenberger and her husband, Terry Rosenberger of Vergennes, Susan Wininger, Cathy Cruz and her husband, Anthony Cruz, all of Murphysboro, Edward Clayton Jr. and his wife Sharon, of Rolla, Mo. and Major Richard "Rick" Clayton and his wife Mindy Clayton, of Fort Benning, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beverly Amschler of Murphysboro.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Scott Rosenberger; and her parents.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County for the excellent care that they have given to Shirley for the past two years.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Preston Foster officiating. Burial will be in Parrish Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Christ the King Lutheran Church or the Murphysboro Food Pantry.
