Velma Davis Obituary
She was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Thompsonville to Eddie and Myrtle (McClerren) Jones. For a child not expected to live past age 3, she was blessed with a very long and full life, living to the age of 84.
Her greatest passions were gospel music, flowers, cooking and reading.
She married Ordell Davis on Sept. 20, 1940, in Jackson, Mo., and they enjoyed 67 wonderful years of marriage before he preceded her in death May 31, 2007.
To this union six children were born, Eddie Paul and wife, Sandi (Hood) Davis of Benton, Christine Clark of Thompsonville, Jane Neal and husband, David of Thompsonville, Denny and wife, Carol (Melvin) Davis of West Frankfort and Kelly Davis of West Frankfort. A daughter, Donna Sue Davis, preceded her in death in 1941. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Mark Clark of Thompsonville.
She was a member of Union Freewill Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in McCann Cemetery near Thompsonville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at the funeral home.
