null DeVanStringham Obituary

DeVan "Dee" Stringham

Washington, Utah

DeVan "Dee" Stringham, age 79, passed away on December 22, 2013, at his home in Washington, Utah of lung disease. He was born July 29, 1934 in Upland, California to Minnie Ione Stringham and Briant DeVan Stringham. Dee married Lois Wilkins in 1956, and they had two children: JoDee and Steve. They were divorced in 1966. He married Judy (Draper) Barker in 1968, and Dee acquired two more children, Robert and Krista.

Dee grew up in Monrovia, California and was interested in scouting, sports, hunting and fishing. He graduated from MAD High School in 1952, and went on to play basketball and to earn a B.A. from the University of Santa Barbara. His interest in fishing was a part-time profession—which turned to a full-time profession in 1973. Dee moved with his family from Balboa Island, California to Brookings, Oregon. He had purchased a boat that was a salmon troller, and later he got a larger boat which was a troller/crabber. He served on the Crab (Dungeness) Commission for six years. He learned how to golf one summer on the coast of Northern California—when it was too windy to fish for salmon. He loved golfing as a hobby almost as much as fishing.

Dee "rediscovered" St. George about 1998. He had come here as a child many times. Dee and Judy started coming here as "rain birds" from their home in Cottage Grove, Oregon, every winter for about 12 years. They decided to make Washington their main home about 3 years ago.

He is survived by his wife Judy, daughter JoDee Stringham of Eugene, OR, son Steve Stringham of Brookings, OR, son Robert Barker of Pasco, WA, and daughter Krista Harrison of Eugene, OR and six grandchildren: Brett Barker of Cornelius, OR, Will Stringham of Brookings, OR, Stephanie Stringham of Laguna Niguel, CA, Grace Harrison of Eugene, OR, Grant Barker of Post Falls, ID, and Haley Harrison of Eugene, OR.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 611 North 2450 East, St. George, UT. A Celebration of Life service will also be held in Brookings, OR, during Memorial Day weekend. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. Dee was a good friend and team mate at UCSB. He was trustworthy, honest and had a fine sense of humor. He will be missed.

Dear Judy and all the wonderful Stringham and Harrison family members and friends, I am so sad to hear about Dee's passing. He was a really, really terrific man and all of you are lights that shine brighter because of him. I remember a comment he made that he doesn't need to go out on the ocean all the time, but needs to make sure it's still there; and I have subscribed to that sentiment ever since. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Blessings & Love.

Judy and family,
I wish to extend my sympathies concerning Dee's passing. I know this is a hard time for everyone and that your grief is deep. Tom and I know Dee and Judy through golfing, one of Dee's favorite hobbies. Judy, if you want to just talk sometime (or walk with Heidee and me in the desert near your home), please give me a call. 229-2780. My thoughts are with you.
