Craig Booth Obituary

Craig Lang Booth

St George - Craig Lang Booth, 77, passed away on the 5th of June 2021. Craig was born February 22, 1944, in St. George to Fred and Marie Lang Booth. He married Maureen Haslam August 5th, 1967, in the St. George LDS Temple.

Doctor Booth's roots run deep in the red sands of Dixie. He started at West Elementary and helped plant the trees that are still part of the city courthouse. Craig was extremely popular with the other kids because he had a television that the kids could watch during lunch. He was the police chief at Woodward Junior High School where he rescued his future wife from the clutches of a would-be suitor. He attended Dixie High School, was on the basketball and football teams where he lost a classmate, Wendell Hafen, on the football field. He and Coach Walt Brooks tried their best to resuscitate him with no success. He then attended Dixie Junior College where he was on the honor roll every quarter and ran for student body president and lost by one vote. He then served in the North Central States Mission, serving from Winnipeg, Canada, to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and held many leadership positions.

After returning home he courted Maureen and asked her to marry him on the steps of the Fine Arts Building before she participated in the D-Day royalty. After 3 years at Dixie, and a week after they got married, he started medical school at the University of Utah. He was the medical student body president where he acquired the nickname "Stokley". After medical school, he did his internship at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California. Before finishing his surgical residency, he was contacted by Dr's Fawson and Staheli to join them in St. George in general medicine.

Starting his practice in St. George, he was immediately busy and has delivered every person we ever met at Paula's Restaurant, or Chuck-a-Rama, including almost all of you reading this. He became Utah Doctor of the Year in 1994 and was awarded by Governor Michael Leavitt. He was President of the Utah State Medical Association from 1987 to 1989 and was always active in state medical politics. He practiced medicine full time until he became the medical director for Dixie Regional Medical Center. He helped design and implement the new St. George Regional Medical Center before leaving for an LDS Mission as Mission President of the Arizona Phoenix mission from 2002 to 2005.

After returning from this mission, he continued to work for Intermountain Healthcare in the rehab center on the top floor of the old hospital. He then moved to the wound clinic where he made a significant impact on the lives of so many that he enjoyed getting to know over the days and weeks he worked with them. He retired in 2016 at the age of 72 but took his expertise to the Doctor's Free Clinic and Booth Wellness Center located at Dixie State. He was a founding member of the St. George Exchange Club and was on the St. George water and power board for many years. One of his proudest contributions to the community is the flagpole on the Red Hill.

In his church callings he was a talented Gospel Doctrine Teacher, was a bishop twice at Dixie State, a counselor in his home ward and home stake, became a very well-loved Mission President, and later served as a temple worker in the St. George, Utah Temple for 3 years.

Craig enjoyed flying his airplane for many years, hiking in the Subway where he single handedly caused the overcrowding leading to the requirement of a permit to make the hike, four wheeling while holding a Diet Coke in one hand and checking Facebook in his other, riding in ambulances because he couldn't stay on his bike and a helmet was of no use, spent over 40 years in Pine Valley and cumulatively 5 years in Lake Powell. Craig and Maureen traveled all over the world together, and with friends, and many foreigners were introduced to the Doc Booth version of "Free at Last". He was in attendance at any sporting event he could find and was named the State of Utah Fan of the Year several years ago.

Craig is survived by his wife, Maureen, of 53 years, the first 50 being the hardest. His five children, Berkeley Craig (Amy Cutler), Derek Craig (Amy Savage), Corbin Craig (Amy Larson), Brittany "Craig" (Mike Fonnesbeck), and Kevin Craig (Kelley Aas [not Amy]), and 15 grandchildren. Marvel Lynne, sister (Kyle Pace) of Parowan, Utah; Kelly Booth, brother (Maryanne Cooley) of Moapa, Nevada; Arlene Booth, sister-in-law of Pine Valley, Utah; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dorrel and Lloyd, sister-in-law Nesa Booth, and granddaughter Virginia Marie.

Funeral services will be on Friday June 11th at the St. George Stake Center (500 N. and Bluff) at 11:00 a.m., with overflow at the Red Hills Chapel. Visitations will be Thursday June 10th from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Spilsbury Mortuary and Friday June 11th 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Internment will take place at the St. George Cemetery. The Booth family invites everyone to line the streets of Tabernacle from 300 West to the cemetery to pay their last respects as the procession passes by.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Doctor's Volunteer Clinic of St. George (1036 E. Riverside Dr., St. George. www.doctorsvolunteerclinic.org).

There was a time I felt Craig and Maureen were our only friends in the 3rd ward. Although living in Springville 95% of the time there would be months at a time we didn´t attend church in the 3rd ward but Craig always said hi and made us feel apart of his world. My heart still hurts and it´s been near impossible to go back to visit the third ward, knowing we won´t see Craig . He wished me Happy Birthday on my last Birthday and said next time down we should go to dinner. I feel bad for so many reasons mostly how much I miss Craig. I can´t imagine how hard it is for his family and those close to him. Craig, was brilliant, kind, knowledgeable, had such an abundance of humor, gracious, thoughtful, and spiritual not to mention so fun. I am just glad Craig Booth was my friend. My prayers continue to be with his family. His dedication to people was and is remarkable, such a great example of Christ-like love. Thank you Craig until we meet again.

My first association with "Doc" was through the Water & Power Board during the mid to late 1990s. I attended because I was mayor of Santa Clara and also involved in my water rights legal practice. It seemed Doc and Ross Hurst monopolized most of the discussions. Together with comments by Bruce Stucki, I'm not sure anyone else, including the Chairman, Shirl Pitchforth, had much input. The interplay between Doc and Ross was fun to observe. He made what could have been pretty boring meetings come alive and civic service fun. Several years ago, on a hot windy summer day, I was returning home along Hwy 18 from our family ranch in Pinto. As I passed the turnoff to Central/Pine Valley, Doc was riding his bike toward St. George against a strong headwind and making little progress. He flagged me down and we put his bike in the back of the pickup and he hopped in. We rode together and chatted just past Winchester Hills then he wanted out to finish the ride into St. George. I will always have fond memories of my association with him. He was a community asset and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with you his family.

I met Dr. Booth in 1973 when he did my physical to become a Jetette at Dixie HS. I worked with him at Dixie Hospital. The last 10 years in Labor and Delivery. I spent countless hours watching TV in an empty labor room with him while we were waiting for one of his patients labors to progress to delivery. I know how priceless those hours were where I had his mostly undivided attention between Midnight and 5am. He couldn’t go home and wake his family, just to turn around and have to come back, but he also didn’t disappear into the Doctors lounge to sleep. I heard about his children and how proud he was of them, and how much he loved his wife, and the church. I fell in love with him when he delivered my children, and that never changed. I told him so, and knew how much he cared for me and all of his patients. He came to my weddings and officiated over the first. Reminding me it wasn’t to late to work on getting sealed in the temple. He never gave up hope that I would. Sorry to the family for the 100’s of interrupted meals, movies and sleep, when I would have to call and say “Hi, this is Cindy in OB. Is Dr. Booth there, please? My prayers are with you now. The world is colder and darker with out him in it. May you find some peace in the love of the millions of people who cared about him and whom he cared about.

I grew up in St. George with Dr. Booth as our family Doctor. When I married and moved to Cedar it was important to me that he was my children's Doctor. Which he was until 2002 when he and Maureen served their mission. One time in his office with my children, my young daughter asked if Dr. Booth was the Prophet. She still thinks he looks like President Hinkley :) I will miss his side hugs! Our prayers are with the Booth Family!

Full of humor, he once told me that when Brigham sent the Saints to settle southern Utah, all the Saints that could read went to St George, the rest stayed in Cedar City.....

As a near next door neighbor and long time member of the 3rd ward, memories of Dr. Booth walking to church past our home each Sunday alongside Maureen fill my head. Last July 4th as our family lit fireworks in the front yard, Dr. Booth rode over on his bike to chat. His presence as a neighbor and family friend made me proud in my youth and has provided comfort to our family in the past years knowing that he was the caretaker of the neighborhood and close by for my dear mother. Dr. Booth, your strength, contributions, compassion and love for the people of the community will forever be etched in my mind. Love and respect to you and your family.

Dr. Booth was not only a man of great accomplishment, but also possessed great kindness. I knew him as an excellent physician, a concerned bishopric member, and a loyal supporter of Dixie High during my years as principal. He was a generous friend to Dixie High and a constant fixture at athletic events. Dr. Booth was never satisfied with simply watching from the sidelines, but was interested in proactively helping others and sought ways to contribute. Those of us who worked at Dixie will always be grateful that he was a presence at our school. Dr. Booth was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers remain with the Booth family.

What a shock to learn of Craig's passing. I lived around the corner from his as a kid (early 50s) and we were best friends at the time. We've touched base a few times since my retirement to SG, and I've always been proud to have known him and of his many accomplishments.

Words cannot express the loss I feel. I know I'm just one of many who feel this way. My heartfelt sympathies to his family.
