Marilyn Thurston Manning, age 87, passed away September 21, 2013 in St. George, Utah. She was born September 17, 1926 in Hurricane, Utah to Paul Elias and Alice Woodbury Thurston. She married William Ririe Manning in the Salt Lake Temple on September 4, 1946.

Marilyn spent her early years in Hurricane Utah; Inkom and Lava Hot Springs, Idaho; and Overton, Nevada. She graduated from Moapa Valley High School, studied piano performance at the McCune School of Music with Jessie Seamons Taylor, and attended the University of Utah and Utah State University. Following her marriage, she lived with her husband in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Danville, Virginia; Salt Lake City Utah; San Rafael and Novato, California; and St, George, Utah. A life-long learner, Marilyn studied and read extensively, especially history and literature. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, and excelled as an accompanist. She was a member of The Church of a Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving numerous times in various positions including president of Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society organizations. In 1989 and 1990 she and her husband served a mission to the Philippines. She also served as an Ordinance Worker in both the Oakland California and St. George Temples. She delighted in serving others.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, William Ririe Manning, children: Barbara Manning (Ronald) Moon, of Port Jefferson, New York, Marian Manning (Dana) Nielson, of Blanding Utah, Jane Manning (Mark) Allen, of Grants Pass, Oregon, William Carl (Julie) Manning, of El Segundo, California, sisters: Thais Thurston Williams, Emma Louise Thurston, and Claire Penelope Thurston Gemmill, brothers: William Henry Thurston and Robert Parker Thurston, 17 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W St. George Blvd. A visitation will be held prior to services at 10:00 a.m. at the mortuary.
