Winston Seegmiller

Winston H. "Win" Seegmiller, a life-long resident of Cedar City, passed away on October 31, 2013 at the age of 93. He was born May 26th 1920 to Adam C. Seegmiller and Ruth Higbee Seegmiller. He married Ruby Anderson September 19th, 1940 in the St.George LDS Temple. Ruby passed away in December 1995 and Win subsequently married Vonna M. Preston on August 23rd, 1997. Win was educated in Cedar City schools and attended the Branch Agricultural College and Brigham Young University. He served in the Utah National Guard and the U.S. Navy during World War II and spent time in Japan after its surrender. Win was appointed Cedar City Treasurer for a short period and provided for his family as a bookkeeper and in his own business as a Certified Public Accountant into his eighties. He was a member of the Rotary club for many years, serving as its song leader for decades and its president once. He was also presented Rotary's Paul Harris Fellow Award for humanitarian service.

Win was an accomplished musician playing mostly alto saxophone and clarinet and even the dreaded oboe a little. Perhaps his greatest legacy was his musical service to the community. At the tender age of ten, he formed a neighborhood band consisting of two harmonicas and a drum. He played in concert, marching and dance bands throughout his school years and cut his first record as a member of the USS Nereus Dance Band in the Navy. Returning to Cedar after the war, he continued to play in several community dance bands as well as the Orchestra of Southern Utah. In 1976, he was asked to form a dance orchestra to play for the 125th Cedar City Birthday Ball, a tradition that continued for over thirty years. He finally gave up playing at the age of 88 saying, "I don't want to go out on a sour note." Win enjoyed the outdoors and fishing and hunting. In later years, those interests gradually morphed into golf and bowling. Win was unfailingly cordial and considerate in all his relationships, and he was respected for his integrity and reliability in business dealings and other tasks. He was a member of the LDS Church, held positions of responsibility and sang in ward choirs.

He is survived by wife, Vonna; children, Keith (Janet) of Cedar City, Eileen (Terry) Lofthouse of Castle Dale, Utah, Louise (Gene) Harris of Lehi, Utah, and Roger (Connie) of Orem, Utah; 16 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; and three of his four brothers: Garn (St. George, Utah), Alan (Woods Cross, Utah), and Robert (Salt Lake City, Utah). He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife (Ruby), one brother (Grant), two Granddaughters (Rachel Seegmiller and Brigitte Galindro), and two great granddaughters (Brittany Nicole Lofthouse and Aurora Lily Swineford).

The children express deep gratitude to Win's wife, Vonna, for her loving care through several years of his decline and to Karen and other staff of Southern Utah Home Care and Hospice for their caring and professional assistance in his last months.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, November 7, 2013 in the Sunbow LDS Ward Chapel, 2015 Wedgewood Lane, Cedar City, Utah. Visitation and viewing will be at the church house from 9:30 to 11:30 am prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
