Darrell L. Clock

Gaston - Darrell L. Clock, 70, of Gaston, passed away on June 23, 2018 while working with family in his barn.

Darrell lived his life as a proud American, Marine, farmer, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend to many. He was born July 5, 1947 in Marion, Indiana to Harold and Dorothy Mae (Parkinson) Clock. He was a 1965 Graduate of Gaston High School and was a Purdue University Alumni. Darrell proudly served his country as a Sergeant and tank commander in Vietnam and received a Bronze Star for heroic achievements during combat action. After returning home from war he farmed with his dad for 30 years and farmed with his son and son-in-law for the remainder of his life. His brother-in-law, Mike Delaney helped Darrell farm for the past 20 years. Darrell was a member of the Gaston United Methodist Church, the Matthews Lions Club, and a past board member of Matthews Feed and Grain. He was also a member of the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association and Lifetime member of the NRA and American Angus Association.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jeni Clock; their two children, Andy Clock (wife Beth) of Marion and Abbi Rudy (husband Chad) of Summitville; his mother, Dorothy Mae Clock of Gaston; a brother, Gerald Clock of Anderson; a sister, Janice Niswander of Gaston; six grandchildren, Serena and Austin Clock, and Cody, Macee, Cooper, and Hank Rudy; and several nieces and nephews.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Harold Lee Clock in 1998.

This is one of my most favorite photos that came out of the Vietnam War. It is tank commander Darrell Clock with a very dirty face after his tank being a escort to a truck resupply convoy along Vietnam National Highway 9 in 1968.

Daryl will be missed at the Iron Skillet. He would come and tell us his war stories. He loved his family dearly. He always praised all of you. I will miss his jokes and his smile.

He may be dirty but he was a leader!!!

It is with a heavy heart that I write this memory of Darrell. He was a extremely competent and a brave US Marine tank commander during the Vietnam War. The Marines who served with him had nothing but the upmost respect for his leadership and his teaching ability.

He was also a valued member of the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association. He was most generous with his time and his knowledge.

Darrell: I will see you when I report for duty at the "guard shack in Heaven."
