Debra Mace Obituary

Debra and Kirk Mace

Muncie - Debra and Kirk Mace, passed away together, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at I.U. Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, from injuries suffered while riding their motorcycle, where they truly lived.

Debbie was born February 3, 1951 in Marion, Ohio, the daughter of Albert and Etheleen (Wallace) Webb. She attended Muncie Southside High School where she was a member of several clubs, graduating in 1969.

Debbie worked at Muncie Central as an aide, then Ball Memorial Hospital for 27 years before serving as Investigator for the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office, where she recently retired. She also was a member of the Muncie Police Department Merit Commision.

She enjoyed any activity with her family or friends, especially outdoor activities. Debbie loved gathering with family for Thanksgiving, her favorite holiday. She also loved going on the Polar Express in Lebanon, OH with her grandchildren. Some of her favorite and most talked about memories were from attending Cincinnati Reds games with her mother, family and friends.

Debbie was an avid motorcycle passenger, who loved to travel anywhere in the United States. She and Kirk were also pillars in the East Central Indiana restaurant community.

She believed that you should always live life to the fullest, be true to yourself and to do the things that make you happy in life. Debbie loved her life.

She is survived by two sons, Jason (Joy) Elwood, and Matt (Heather) Elwood; five grandchildren, Jacey (James) Reed, Jalen Elwood, William Elwood, Olivia Elwood, and Henry Elwood; a sister, Paula Wright; a brother, Albert (Dorothy) Webb, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents.

Kirk was born March 7, 1959, in Muncie, the son of James and Ann (Holaday) Mace. Kirk was the oldest of 5 brothers and 1 sister.

He attended Cowan High School where he played baseball and basketball, graduating in 1977.

After high school, Kirk entered the United States Air Force. He was a Military Police Officer, stationed in San Antonio, Texas; Bitburg, Germany and Rapid City, South Dakota. After completing his military term in 1981, Kirk returned to Muncie. He began working as a Bartender at TR's Lounge (which was owned by his Uncle George). It was at TR's where Kirk met Debra Elwood. She was an "occasional" customer at the bar, and she and Kirk began dating. The bar is also where Kirk met, and worked with, some of his best friends, including Jeff and Sue Bird.In 1985, Kirk was selected for the Muncie Police Department where he would follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Rusty Holaday. In December of 1985, Kirk married Debra and they began their adventurous life together.

Kirk's career with the Muncie Police Department was lengthy and honorable. He respected his position as a Law Enforcement Officer and always conducted himself professionally and with integrity. He reached the rank of Sergeant within the department.

While with the MPD, Kirk served on the SWAT Team for over twenty years. But his greatest loves were working with his officers, helping people, and shopping with kids at Christmas time. He took his oath to "serve and protect" very seriously. Kirk was also a legendary player for the FOP softball team for two decades.

Away from the department, Kirk loved being with Deb and his family. They loved going to the movies, restaurants, and taking motorcycle trips. He and Deb had ridden all over the United States and parts of Canada. They loved being on the bike together. Kirk also had a well-known love for cats, including his baby "Tink", who is completely lost without him.

Mr. Mace is survived by a large and loving family: his mother, Ann Mace; one sister, Kelly (Ken) Miller; four brothers: Kris (Kim) Mace, Kyle (Krista) Mace, Kacy (Melissa) Mace, and Ken (Cindy) Mace; step sons: Jason (Joy) Elwood and Matt (Heather) Elwood; uncle George (Joni) Mace; aunt, Adine (Jerry) Winkle; grandchildren: Jacey, Jalen, William, Olivia, and Hank; nieces: Gabrielle, Kellsie, Rylee, Maya, Maran, Kameron, Kristine, and Kyler; and nephews: Ryan, Kory, Kade, Karson, Jack, Taylor, and Konner.

In addition, Kirk is also survived by his Brothers and Sisters in Blue; an amazing collection of people with hearts the size of buses, who have taken care of Kirk and Deb since the beginning of this ordeal.

Kirk was preceded in death by his father Jim, and his grandparents, Earl and Elizabeth Mace, and Rusty & Thelma Holaday.

The Mace and Elwood families would also like to express our extreme appreciation to the nursing staff of the Neurocritical Care Unit at Methodist Hospital. The level of care and compassion they provided to Deb and Kirk was extraordinary and gave us peace of mind about their treatment.

Per the request of Kirk and Debra, no public services will take place at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muncie Animal Care, 901 W. Riggin Rd., Muncie, IN 47303 or Fraternal Order of Police, 821 S. Butterfield Rd., Muncie, IN 47303.

I did not know this couple personally, but worked with Ann, Kirk's mother at Wilson. Knowing what a lovely person she was, I am sure that Kirk was just as kind and caring as she was. To Ann, my prayers go out to you and your family.
