Derek Hunter Ruttan

Derek Hunter Ruttan, 60, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021 while gardening with his family at his home.

He was born on April 15, 1961 in Muncie, the son of Charles K. and Norma R. (Rude) Ruttan and graduated from Southside High School in 1979.

Derek owned an Allstate Insurance Agency for many years and was a savvy businessman. He was also a walnut tree farmer, a member of "Indiana Woodlands" group and member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church.

His hobbies were gardening, artist, ceramics, woodworking, stained glass, sewing, bee keeper and philanthropist. He was a mentor and life coach to his children and grandchildren who affectionately called him "Pa" and "Papaw".

He leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret Ruttan; four children, Kelly Rice, Christine McCammon, Jamie Brennan (husband, Jim) and Fred Alan Hancock (wife, Lisa); his mother, Norma R. Ruttan; twelve grandchildren, Candice Turner (husband, Geoff), Celeste Daniel (husband, Travis), Kelsey Hancock, Hannah Rice, Derek Bonewit, Danielle Crabtree, Jackson Sigler, Riley Brennan, Caleb Hancock, Benjamin Brennan, Nihinsa and Ranuga; ten great-grandchildren, Leland, Lonnie, Nate, Henry, Bentley, Avah, Asher, Willow, Esme and Monroe; three siblings, Charles "Chip" Ruttan (wife, Jennifer), Alison Yancey and Jeremy Ruttan; nieces and nephews, Charley, Emily, Miriam, CJ and Alex.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 24, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 1200 W. Riverside Avenue, with Fr. Coady Owens presiding. Cremation will take place following services.

Family and friends may call at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 1200 W. Riverside Avenue, from 12:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 24, 2021.
