Mr. Matthews was born in Batesburg, son of the late David W. Matthews and Maude Lee Ruth Adams Matthews. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and served on the building committee. He served in the National Guard in Saluda for 20 years. He was a volunteer at Midland Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Waters Matthews; son, Anthony “Tony” Matthews of Batesburg; sister, Georgia Lucille Harvey of GA; 3 nephews and 1 niece.
Family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at his residence. Memorials can be made to: Cleves Matthews Family Cemetery Fence Fund, c/o Gladys Matthews, 127 Cleve Cemetery Road, Batesburg, SC 29006. Milton Shealy Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gladys and Tony:
We were so sorry to hear about Alfred. Please know you both have our sympathy and will be in our continued prayers. We will not be able to make it to the services because of work schedules. Just know that God is a great comforter and He will take care of you as you place your trust in him.
