Allen Corbett Obituary

Professor Emeritus Allen P. Corbett COLUMBIA - Professor Emeritus, Allen P. Corbett, of the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina, died May 28, 2017, with his wife Eileen and friends by his side. Born April 17, 1939, in Camden, Professor Corbett was the son of the late Robert Allen Corbett of Wagener and Melba Louise Hegler Corbett of Kershaw. In 1948, at age 9, he contracted severe paralytic polio that nearly claimed his life. Confined for life to a wheelchair, he completed academic studies at home and graduated from Columbia High School in 1957 despite having not attended public school except for the first two grades. Through rehab at Warm Springs Rehabilitation Center in Georgia, founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1927, Professor Corbett found the hope and determination to lead an independent life in spite of disabilities. In July, 1957, he moved to Washington, DC, and completed his BS Degree in Business Administration and Statistics from American University in 1961. In his sophomore year, he received an appointment as a Summer Fellow for the world renowned cardiologist, W. Proctor Harvey, Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Chairman of the Division of Cardiology. This was the beginning of a life-long friendship with a distinguished man of medicine. In 1961, he accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, DC, as a Medical Aid. He was assigned to the Georgetown Clinical Research Institute which was actively involved in clinical research focused on the physiologic aging of pilots. He eventually was appointed as Biomedical Statistician for the Institute. This involved the statistical analysis and extensive clinical data on airline pilots. During this time, he worked for the eminent neurosurgeon, Dr. Arthur T. Wentz, Director of the Institute. In July, 1965, he returned to Columbia and began his career at the University of South Carolina as a Computer Programmer and Lecturer in Computer Science for the data processing center on the Columbia campus. During this time, he attended graduate school and earned an MBA from the Moore School of Business in 1969. During this time, he taught several courses in Computer Science and served as Research Assistant for doctoral students. In 1971, he accepted an appointment as Research Supervisor for the former South Carolina Employment Security Commission in Columbia. His research focused on insured unemployment data, occupational/industry employment trends, and other areas of an economic nature. In 1973, he was invited by Dr. James F. Kane, Dean of the School of Business, to become Director of the James C. Self Computer Center as well as Lecturer in Management Information systems. In 1984, he was granted tenure as Assistant Professor of Management Science with a specialty in management information systems. From that time until his retirement in April, 2004, he was actively involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate class in MIS as well as conducting his own research. Post-retirement, Professor Corbett returned to the classroom as adjunct faculty. He loved teaching young people, inspiring and mentoring many young adults at the University of South Carolina and in the community. During the 1970s and 1980s, he became actively involved in the civil rights movement for persons with disabilities. He worked with the South Carolina General Assembly, the Office of the Governor, the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department, the Easter Seals Society, and many other organizations. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all persons with disabilities and to promote their independence in society. He developed the first computer-based information system of statewide services for people with disabilities, which is still in use today. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious national Elmer Bartel National Leadership Award granted in 1993. He was listed in numerous publications including Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the Southeast, Community Leaders of the World, and many others. One of Professor Corbett's many interests was military history. He had a great love of and respect for men and women in the military. His father and uncle served in the Army and Navy respectively in World War II; his Uncle Sonny was a survivor of the Battle of Normandy. Professor Corbett served as president of the Columbia Council of the Navy League of the US for several years in support of the military and education of the public as to the value of sea services. Professor Corbett was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia and a committed follower of Jesus Christ. Professor Corbett demonstrated the courage, endurance, compassion, and the love of Christ. He lived by the words of St. Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." A couple of his favorite lines were, "God is sovereign, we have no control;" and "Life is about soldiering through the tough spots." These two notions characterized Al's life: grace and resiliency. He was a source of inspiration for many. He is survived by his beloved wife Eileen Schleelein Corbett, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11o'clock, Friday, June 2nd at First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Thursday evening, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. I first met Prof Al through his Wife Eileen“s Brother Eric who I have been friends with for 52 years. I often told Al that he reminded me so much of my Mothers Dad who was also a College Professor that loved teaching his Students just like Al. My Grandfather was a teacher at the University of Pittsburgh for many years. Similar to my Grandfather, Al was the consummate Gentleman who ALWAYS had a Kind word for me everytime I would see him. Al and I talked about Many Subjects. He was a master conversationalist. He always asked about my Family and was most interested in learning about my Loved ones who served in our Military going back many years. Al was Extremely intelligent and Man of utmost Integrity. I feel so blessed that our Lives crossed. I will always have a special place in my Heart for Al and his Beloved Wife Eileen. May they both Rest in Peace. I cherish this photo of Al and I that was taken back in 2016 at his Home in Columbia. Everytime I look at it I count my Blessings that I knew this OUTSTANDING Human Being

When, where, how or why I met Allen will remain a mystery to me, but it was truly a gift. I will guess it had to be at USC in the physical science building, as that was where I started at USC. My memories of him are filled with smiles and delight as he would always take time to talk, and always had a smile and such an upbeat personality that I just had to love him for all the great energy and happiness he infused in me.

His passing brought a tear to my eye as he was such a wonderful part of my history. I can still see his smile from all times, and the last time in 5 Points.

Yes, he was such a wonderful part of my young history, and his attitude, patience and care have helped me to be the man I am.

Though he is greatly missed, he is such a gift and blessing to have known.

In the regular times that I was able to spend with Dr Corbett over the past 4 years my life was made richer with each and every sentence he spoke. What a remarkable man who against all odds, made an immeasurable impact on this world for good.

Another chapter needs to be added to John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage. That chapter is entitled "Allen Corbett." Allen exuded courage and bravery. He inspired everyone he encountered. Allen: Rest in Peace. You left the world a better place.

Al lived a life "on parade with King Jesus" a trophy of His grace. My prayers are with Eileen and all grieving the departure of a man who always encouraged, always pointed others towards what was lovely and good, and, most of all, towards the source of all goodness, His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We grieve, but with hope, and I so look forward to the day when we can stand with Al, rejoicing before the throne!

I had the distinct privilege and honor to be one of Al's attendants over a period of eight years while I was in college and before I met my wife. There are more memories than a book could fill of the many conversations, the sitting around singing songs while one of us played guitar, or watching a late night episode of The Andy Griffith Show. But three things stand out among them all: 1) Al never allowed his physical condition to keep him from living life to the full. The fact that he finished up teaching a class at USC two weeks or so ago is testimony to his determination to live and serve others. 2) In all the years I have known Al, and especially during my tenure as one of his attendants, I cannot recall one instance of him complaining, about anything! He was always thankful to the Lord and those whom the Lord sent to walk with him through life. 3) And, above all, Al's faith in Christ and his hope in the power of Almighty God. When we prayed together-sometimes a whole group of us (at one point there were three of us guys living with Al and serving him as attendants)-he never failed to address the Lord as "Almighty God." The fact that he lived so long when he was expected to die during childhood, having become a victim of polio, is testimony to the power of God in his life. He knew it and held fast to the Lord throughout his life. He was a pilgrim and he has now arrived at home on that other shore. What an example to so many of us! He will be deeply missed by us all, but none more than his beloved wife Eileen. Eileen, Eve and I love you and are praying for you.

Run, Allen, Run

Run, Allen, run! Run, Allen, run!
Now it's your precious time to have fun.

Run those glorious streets of gold.
Tell the angels your stories that never get old.

Run to our Christ and bow at His feet.
It's your time for joy - no room for defeat.

Run to your mom and your dad.
Tell them we're happy for them though we can help but feel sad.

Run to your aunts, uncles and friends.
Run to all your loved ones and kin.

Run, Allen, run. Run, Allen, run.
Your brilliant work on Earth is now done.

You stood among the tallest of earthly men.
So many awards and accomplishments did you win!

You touched many lives with your wisdom and advice.
Now it's your turn to polish your halo and not think twice.

So loved were you by your devoted wife!
She stood by your side through troubles, pain and strife.

Though I have sweet memories with my blessed Cuz,
I think of you in the now, instead of what was.

You are feeling strong and energetic, breathing the fresh heavenly air.
You are running and jumping. No more wheelchair!

Now we all must say a sorrowful goodbye,
But we will see you again in the twinkling of an eye.

Run, Allen, run! Run, Allen, run!
Your heavenly work has only just begun.

In loving memory of Allen Corbett.
You will never be forgotten.

The Columbia Chapter of the US Naval Academy Alumni Association is saddened by Allen's death. We knew him well for his exemplary courage, strong support for the US Military, and the commitment of his time and energy to the recognition of leading members of USC's ROTC and of many of the State's NJROTCs. He was a true patriot.
