Betty Lane was predeceased by her husband, John "Johnny" Lawrence Gramling. She is survived by her daughters, Cherry Lane Gramling and Tracy Gramling DuRant; sons, John Gramling (Lisa) and Lawrence Gramling (Kathryn); granddaughters, Lauren Kathryn Gramling and Paxton Elizabeth Gramling; brother, Rhude Cherry (Lib); and her loyal dog, Dixie.
Betty Lane was born in Orangeburg, SC and lived a fulfilling life in the Four Holes community outside of Orangeburg. She was a graduate of Columbia College and honored her alma mater throughout her life. Betty Lane was a life time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
It would not be overstated to say that Betty Lane put Orangeburg on the map. She represented her hometown in many state, national, and international beauty pageants, achieving such honors as Miss South Carolina Maid of Cotton, National Peach Queen, Empress of Beauty in Puerto Rico, Miss USA, and first runner-up to Miss World. Her efforts as Peach Queen, along with the efforts of the South Carolina Peach Growers, Kellogg, and General Mills, established South Carolina as THE Peach State. She also served as President of the Modeling Association of America International, based in New York.
On national television and by Don McNeill of the Breakfast Club Radio in Chicago, Betty Lane was referred to as "Miss Fruit Salad," gaining that title by being Miss Cherry, Peach Queen from Orangeburg. This title is on record at the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.
Locally, Betty Lane owned and operated a Charm School, teaching many young people and adults' good manners for any occasion. She also owned and operated a Modeling School teaching young and old confidence on the runway. Every year she took her students to New York for competitive modeling, winning many awards yearly. She saw to it that even those who could not afford the trip, made the trip.
We will all miss her generosity, her love, her charm (as she was always a lady), her jokes, and her pound cakes, her peanut brittle, her fudge, her ketchup, her.........!
The family appreciates and is thankful for the attention and care given by Sherry Green, her caregiver. We are also very grateful for care given by Amanda and Kim of Grove Park Hospice.
