Betty Shuler Obituary

Betty Shuler
June 5, 1926 - October 2, 2021
Mount Pleasant, South Carolina - On Saturday, October 2, Betty Stine Shuler slipped gently into the arms of our beautiful Savior Jesus Christ as her daughters held her hands.
Betty was born on June 5, 1926, daughter of Vance Marshall and Roxanna Freeland Stine in Charlotte, NC. She was the widow of Lewis Hayne Shuler, VI.
Betty attended Central High School and graduated from Queens College with a BS in Sociology and where she was a member Alpha Delta Pi.
Prior to starting her family, she served as a Social Worker for Mecklenburg County's Department of Public Welfare. She and Lew attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church and she volunteered for the American Red Cross.
She and Lew later moved their young family to Columbia, SC. Many organizations benefitted from her time and talent as a volunteer. The family was active at St. Paul's Lutheran Church which led to volunteer time spent at the Lowman Home, and the State Hospital. Betty also gave her time counseling with Planned Parenthood. She was a dedicated volunteer for the Republican Party in its fledgling days in Columbia working on numerous campaigns. She was active in the efforts to allow women to serve on juries.
Many residents also benefitted from both hot meals and genuine encouragement as she was one of the first volunteers for Meal on Wheels.
After Lew's retirement they moved from the family home to Summit Place. They enjoyed travel and the many lifelong friends they met there. Betty also supported her husband and daughter as the Vice President of Sales for their small company, SLAT-MAT Enterprises.
In 2002 they moved to the Franke at Seaside Retirement Community in Mt. Pleasant. They shared 64 years together and enjoyed their life at Franke riding trikes and participating in all activities. They were members of All Saints Lutheran Church where they volunteered in the Respite Program. They also attended the chapel at Franke.
Betty was loved by all for her kind, gracious, and tenderhearted care for others which was always spiced with a fun-loving sense of humor. When asked recently by her pastor to tell him what she enjoyed she responded without hesitation "To dance!" She expressed herself exuberantly through dance whether it was the jitterbug, the hokey pokey entertaining at the Lowman Home and State Hospital or line dancing for exercise at the Franke.
"Thou hast turned my mourning into dancing; thou hast put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness." Psalms 30:11
Betty is survived by her daughter Roxanna (Charles) Prezioso of N. Litchfield and Libby (Leo) Fary of Mt. Pleasant. And be her grandchildren and great grandchildren Sam (Alissa, Quin and Isabel) Tinsley of Florence, Marshall (Zach, Tinsley and Will) Minton of Columbia, Asa (fiancé Stephanie) Fary of Charleston and Katie (Trent) Weiss of Charlottesville, VA.
She is predeceased by her husband, parents, and dear brother Marshall Stine.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the many special friends and caring staff at Franke and the angels of Lutheran Hospice.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m. in the Burges Center Courtyard at Franke at Seaside with a reception following.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Franke at Seaside Chapel Fund, 1885 Rifle Range Rd, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, All Saints Lutheran Church, 2107 N. Hwy 17, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466 or Lutheran Hospice, 1885 Rifle Range Rd #46, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.

Betty was such a delightful "big kid" that she brought smiles to every room she entered. She didn't have to know a person very long before she made them feel like she could be their grandmother, best friend, or confidante in crime. Kudos on a life lived well, Nana! She leaves behind old friends, family, and new friends that will always smile when they think of her with love. I hope to be just like her when "I grow up!" RIP...
