To. Ms. Thea Rubin-November 15, 2016
Dear Thea: I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you from your earlier note to me on Chad. I still find it so hard to accept that your brother is gone.
Chad was very special. Not only was he very bright and a quick study in the microbiology laboratory, he was just a fine human being. He was always concerned about others and always wore a smile. He was a happy man, and his happiness and enthusiasm was infectious.
We have lost a wonderful person, and his passing continues to fuel the mystery we'll never understand in this life: "why the good ones?"
Yours with deepest sorrow, Mike Madigan.

I just read about Chad in the SIU alumni magazine. Chad and I worked together at SIU's Morris Library. He was one of the nicest and warmest people I have ever met and I will never forget him. The world has lost a great soul. Rest in Peace, Chad, and may God Bless his Family.

I worked with Dr. Rubin for twelve(12)
wonderful years. Such an amazing, caring Doctor that made sure you treated
his patients with the same respect as
he would. I missed that great smile of
his when I left Surgical Associates in
2009. But, by the grace of God and his
infinite wisdom, I needed to have surgery in August of 2015...Dr. Rubin
was my referred surgeon. It was great to
see his big smile as we hugged and reminisced about our days at SASC. He
was a great surgeon/friend during and
after my surgeon. About two(2) weeks
later, I went for my post-op exam and
call into a room only to be told that
Dr. Rubin wanted me to know what was
going on. My heart literally felt that
it had fallen from chest. For at that point, he was more friend to me than ever. My mind went back to the big smile, courteous, very pleasant mannered
person that I knew for the last sixteen(16) years, just couldn't be sick. From that point, I communicated
through cheerful cards. But, I am
saddened about his passing, and my
sincere sympathy is expressed to his
family during this difficult time. He
will always be missed and loved. RIP
on my friend.."We all loved you, but God
apparently loved you best."

I had the opportunity to work with Chad on a committee with the American College of Surgeons (ACS). As so many have mentioned, he had an infectious enthusiasm that helped to make the tedious more engaging and complex more approachable. However, it was my first encounter with Chad that was the most impactful. He spoke at an ACS Young Fellows and Leadership Conference. He spoke about how one is able to devote time to groups like the ACS and have an impact on the practice of surgery as a whole while still maintaining a life and a surgical practice at home. I can only imagine how many others he was able to impact in a similar manner.

I am saddened to hear of the demise of my friend Chad Rubin MD. It has been close to 30 yrs since he "brightened up" my daily teaching rounds when I was his attending and he was a medical student at SIU school of Medicine in Springfield, IL. Through the years, I was always able to connect with him at the ACS Congress/Governors meetings/or SIU alumni events. My connection with Chad actually goes back even further, as I knew his father, Harry Rubin, PhD., an early SIU faculty member. One would always appreciate Chad for his smile, pleasant demeanor, and attitude of eternal optimism. He was a great ambassador for the ACS. Chad possessed a kind heart and a welcome spirit. God Bless you Chad, you are already missed. Max D. Hammer, MD, FACS, Springfield, IL

Mr. Sandlin and all Dr. Rubin's family:
These thoughts of others come to mind in considering the life of Dr. Rubin and the events that affected him personally: Nobody knows how things will turn out, that's why they go ahead and play the game...You give it your all and sometimes amazing things happen, but it's hardly ever what you expect. Gennifer Choldenko.
Every person according to his light," said Ames "You must help the world express itself. T. Dreiser in "Sister Carrie."
And Gilda Radner, in her forties when faced with ovarian cancer in the late eighties:
I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.
I saw Dr. Rubin face down his illness with courage and style at the St. Luke's inauguration earlier this spring. Many people who knew Dr. Rubin better than I have commented so favorably on his character, zest for life and surgical skills. I hope your memories of all these good parts of Dr. Rubin's life will console you and mitigate your present grief.

"I worked with Dr. Rubin at Surgical Associates of SC for several years. He was a great doctor who loved his patients--they loved him back. We shared the appreciation for delicious desserts. Since we were both October babies, I would make something for his birthday. When his birthday would come, he made sure he came by my desk acting as if he was just speaking. Of course, I would have already hidden whatever I made him, leaving him to think I forgot. I will never forget his laugh and smile...."

Chad was one of our undergraduate "stars" in the Department of Microbiology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the mid-1980s. Besides excelling in the classroom, Chad was a spectacular undergraduate researcher in my laboratory and performed experiments that lead to a joint publication of his and mine in 1986. Chad was a careful, skillful, and enthusiastic researcher and always loved to discuss his results and his hypotheses to explain them. He was a bright young man with a wide smile and a great personality. Rest in Peace, Chad.
