Daniel Dukes Obituary

Daniel Eugene Dukes COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Daniel Eugene Dukes, 90, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Dukes died Tuesday, February 5, 2013. Dan was born September 14, 1922, in Orangeburg, S.C., he was a son of the late Basil Manley and Sarah LaBoone Dukes. In October 1943, Dan entered the U.S. Army where he served in Company E, 100th Infantry. His unit landed in Normandy a week after D-Day in June 1944, and marched across northern France and the Rhineland. Wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, Dan was awarded a Purple Heart and the Victory Medal, and received an honorable discharge in February 1946. After discharge, Dan used the G.I. Bill to earn his BA degree from Clemson College, then moved to Columbia in 1950 where he taught industrial arts, 9 years at Wardlaw Junior High School, and 23 years at Dreher High School and more importantly met the love of his life, Harriet "Tish" Robinson, whom, he married in Kingsport, Tenn., on December 15, 1956. Dan had a lifelong love of woodworking, from building houses to making furniture, lamps and the Pinewood Derby track for his sons' Cub Scout troop. He and "Tish" enjoyed camping with family all over the U.S. and made numerous trips abroad. They cherished the memories of days shared with family and friends at their beach house on Folly Island, and will always carry a drop of saltwater in their blood. Closer to home, Dan could usually be found happily working around the house and tending his tomato patch. The Dukes were long-time members of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral where Dan was an usher and he volunteered for many years in the Washington Street Soup kitchen. Dan is survived by his wife, "Tish"; their children, Janet (Michael) Nease of Irmo, Charles (Julie) Dukes of Midland, Mich., Jim (Daphne) Dukes of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; their beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Steven, and Daniel Nease, Tom, Helen and Peter Dukes and Jaryd and Tara Dukes. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Basil Manley, Jr. The family extends its sincere thanks to hospice in-home care, especially his caregivers, Marlene, Sandra and Gavert and his friends and neighbors for their support, care and compassion. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stone Mark Lane, Suite 300, Columbia SC 29201; Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia SC 29201 or a charity of one's choice. I fondly remember my woodshop days at Dreher. Mr. Dukes taught with passion and patience. He instilled a love of working with wood in me and I thank him for his service to both our country and to teaching our youth through the years.

We are so sorry about the death of Mr. Dukes. We thank him for his service to our country, fighting to rid our world of tyranny and injustice. We owe so much to "The Greatest Generation". Perry's father was also at the Battle of the Bulge", what these men did and went thru, we could never repay them for or honor them enough. He is also 90 now. We hope and pray that family and loved ones will find strength and comfort in your faith and your memories.

I had Mr. Dukes teach me in shop class in 1967 at Dreher. He was a great teacher and a smart man. My prayers go out to his family for their loss.
