Dorothy Funk
Dorothy "Dot" Funk COLUMBIA - Dorothy "Dot" Funk passed peacefully on November 26th at the age of 90. Dot is predeceased by her brother John Murrell; her husband of 44 years, Dolive Funk; and partner of 13 years, Dick Nelson. She is survived by her dear friend Bob Ciehanski, daughter Virginia and her husband Hoke, son Harry and his wife Amy; grandchildren Jessica, Alex, Margaret, Zebulon, Sadie, Daniel, William, and Liberty; and great-grandchildren Eva, Xander, Leo, and Violet. Dot's family remembers her as a Southern belle who was gentle yet brooked no nonsense. She was adventurous - traveling to Europe, returning to college, learning to bowl and golf, and teaching at the Shepherd's Center into her 80s. At 71, she was graduated cum Laude with a degree in English Literature from USC. Dot was an avid gardener, raising award-winning iris as a part of the SC Iris Society. She was vibrant and self-reliant until a few weeks ago and will be fondly remembered by everyone with whom she crossed paths. The family thanks the Village at Southlake, Palmetto Heart Hospital, and Agape Hospice for their excellent care. Dot has arranged to donate her body to science; loved ones are encouraged to celebrate her life in whatever way feels meaningful to them. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Cancer Society, Shepherd's Center, or the Summit Speech School.

Dorothy was a great friend and one of the finest people I have ever known. We were active together at Union United Methodist church and dancing at the Gathering. We each remarried and kept in touch sporadically but I will always consider her as one of my dearest friends. It is with great sadness that I learned of her passing but know that she led a happy life. She will be missed and always remembered as a very special friend. My deepest sympathy to Jennie, Jessica, Zeb, Hoke and all of the family.
