Eddie Williams Obituary

Dr. Eddie Meek Williams, III
September 1, 1949 - August 17, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina - Dr. Eddie Meek Williams, III, was born September 1, 1949, in Columbia to his parents, Eddie Meek Williams, Jr, and Rosa Cashion Williams. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on August 17th, 2021. Eddie had a love for music, history and always loved learning new things. Eddie grew up on Lake Murray and attended Irmo High School, "when it was a country school," he would say. Eddie was the valedictorian of the class of '67. A core group of these '67 graduates still meet for lunch monthly and Eddie enjoyed sharing stories with them. Eddie attended Duke University and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He went on to medical school at Duke and completed his internship and residency at the Duke Hospital.
Prior to beginning his professional career in Columbia, Dr. Williams and his wife, Kathie, served as medical missionaries within the Medical Benevolence Foundation in Zaire (the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Dr. Williams began his practice of Pulmonary and Critical Care in the early 1980s. He developed his practice with a very devoted group of nurses, respiratory therapists (RT), and office staff that worked with him for many years. Dr. Williams also practiced internal medicine with the Columbia Medical Group. Dr. Williams and his wife, Kathie, raised three very talented and lovely daughters. He was an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and Bethel Bible study teacher. He led mission trips to Brazil and participated in mission efforts in Sudan.
Once he established his practice in Columbia, his comprehensive care of his patients would begin early in the morning and finish very late in the evening. He was loved by colleagues, nurses, RTs, and other hospital staff for his diligent and passionate care. Dr. Williams met his current wife, Vickie, in the ICU. They were married in 2011 and have shared a mutual love of critical care, traveling abroad with close friends, and spending time together in their lake house. Over the last few years, Dr. Williams struggled with mobility issues related to back problems and battled two different cancers, but continued to care for his patients as long as he could. He was highly respected by his colleagues for his attention to detail and was loved by his patients because of his compassionate bedside manner. Dr. Williams and his wife, Vickie, have attended Union United Methodist Church in Irmo for the last 11 years. They have many friends there but have enjoyed their Living Faith Sunday School class the most.
Dr. Williams was preceded in death by his father, Eddie M. Williams, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife, Vickie Bearden Williams, mother Rosa Williams, sisters Jane (Terry) Wood, Laura Cowan, and brother, John (Debbie) Williams, his children Sarah (Andrew) Lin, Rebecca (Nate) Herring, Dr. Elizabeth (Vaughn) Braxton, Jared Horton and Jamie Horton. He is also survived by his precious ray of sunshine, Eleanor Herring, his granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service for Dr. Eddie Meek Williams, III, 71, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 20, 2021, at Union United Methodist Church, 7582 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063. Visitation will follow in the Narthex of the church.
Memorials may be made to the Medical Benevolence Foundation, 9555 W. Sam Houston Pkwy, Suite 170, Houston, TX 77099.

Dr. Williams was my father´s primary care physician for many years until his passing in March 2019. He was an excellent physician and I was saddened to hear of his passing. I thought he had retired when I didn´t see his name on the list anymore. I´m saddened but he is getting his well deserved rest.

I am so sorry to see that Eddie has passed away. Such a wonderful, caring, intelligent, and giving person. My condolences to his wife Vickie, and all his family and friends. I know you will miss him very much. I'm so glad I had the chance to visit when we had the last HS reunion. I was delighted to meet Vickie and spend time with them both.

Dr. Williams was not only my medical provider, but a great mentor and confidant. He took interest in more than my physical health and often exchanged intimate and personal life stories and lessons with me. I always hoped that he would get better and return to the practice, but God had other plans for this exemplary soul. May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Deepest heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Dr. Williams family, his friends and admired work associates. Sadly, I was just informed of his passing today (10-1-21) by his former staff with a follow-up appointment. He continued to see patients (me) though he was wheelchair bound. This speaks volumes of his devotion and dedication to his profession, his staff and of course patients. We need more doctors of his caliber in the medical profession. Rest in peace.

I remember Eddie from Irmo High. I was a senior in 1963-64. It was Mother's first year teaching there - Bridget Osborne. She loved him, knew him to be bright. He must have taken one of her Foreign language classes. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Dr Williams will always hold a special place with my family. He was on call the night my Father passed away. I will never forget the ER Physician telling me Dr Williams would´ve taking over the care when he was moved upstairs. He was an Angel sent to us! I was a patient of Dr Williams after Dr Ben Miller retired and followed him for 30 plus years. Keeping Mrs. Williams and family in prayer!!

Saddened to see that Dr Eddie Williams has left earth, but I know that He has met The MASTER and I has reached Paradise. I know my Mother, Mary F Young, his patient from 1989 - 2016 was thrilled to greet him. I have been praying for his healing since I heard of his illness in April 2021 and now he has his permanent healing. Dr Eddie kept my Mother, Mary here a long time with his straight forward honest treatment. He tweaked her C-Pap setting as long as possible before going to Bi-Pap care - You never knew when he would show up at the hospital because he spent time individually with each of his patients. Our family love and appreciate his compassionate and knowledge of his care. We learned so much from him - he always did his dictation while you were getting his instruction on next step. He was ALWAYS willing to go the extra mile and treated my Mother as if she were his Mother. Columbia SC

I remember Dr. Eddie Williams as a physician who was always ready and willing to step in and help a fellow physician with the most critically ill patients in the ICU. He wasn't afraid to take on the most challenging cases, and did so with intelligence, compassion and determination.

Dr. Eddie Williams was my late mother, Mary Royster Chandler's internist/pulmonologist from the time he opened practice in early 1980s from Dr. Ben Miller's practice. Dr. Williams was an excellent physician and an amazing diagnostician. He was always straightforward and caring to his patients. It was always assuring to me that Dr. Williams was my Mom's doctor and overseerer of her comprehensive medical care. God bless Dr. William's whole family. We will all miss him. I feel blessed to have known him. His medical team were so good to my Mom during her lifetime. He has touched so many lives in a positive and healing way. I wish more physicians were like Dr. Eddie Williams.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Williams. He cared for my father for several years. Our family appreciated everything he did providing medical care and caring for my father, who passed on while under his care. I'm sure my dad is grinning from ear to ear welcoming Dr. Williams in heaven. Thank you Dr. Williams for how well you treated my father, family & all your patients.

Eddie was more than just a wonderful doctor. That too but a scholar, muse and the kind of friend that is rare and infrequent. While brilliant, what came across was engagement. As a patient, a slight mention of some concern launched a search for the reason and no pullback until determined. As a friend, always upbeat and would "lean forward" to give you his attention. We were among those that were fortunate to travel with Eddie and Vickie. More than a special companion, he was also a handy, French speaking, resource which was more than useful in Paris and the Bourgogne. And his love of life included a fondness for wine creating special memories of shared moments around the table. We lift a glass to Eddie with bittersweet love, missing him but knowing, after an undeserved battle, he is now out of pain and with his Lord and savior.

I am so saddened to learn of Dr. Williams´ passing. He was my doctor for over 16 years and I trusted him completely. He was kind, compassionate, and very thorough in the caring of his patients. He was the best and will be greatly missed by many. My sympathies to his family who he spoke of often during my many visits with him.
